Hello from the third National Conservatism conference, meeting in Miami. Gov. Ron DeSantis addressed the conference on the first night, and blew everyone away. It helped that he followed a dull but half-hysterical rant by Sen. Rick Scott, who fired a barrage of Republican cliches at the audience (watch it here). A conservative writer friend sitting across the room texted me during the speech to joke that this thing was so bad it's causing him to rethink all his convictions.

It can’t just be ONE person - we all have to start pushing back and restoring freedom and liberties
Maybe... but Donald Trump is still conservatism’s PRESENT.
“It can’t just be ONE person”
Correct.
Yes, with luck and determination, DeSantis is the future. The political right is starving for capable leaders, and Ron DeSantis has emerged as one.
I also had to chuckle about the author's use of 'DEI', which used to be 'DIE' -- "Diversity, Inclusion, Equity". I'd say that acronym was too close to the truth.
I do get tired of the DeSantis push. Much as I like him it is turning me off.
Great job Ron, keep showing us the way in Florida. There’s time enough to see about 2028. The massive almost insane attacks on Trump tell me that he’s the one the deep state fears.
Kari Lake once she wins will be right behind him.
I get the impression of a long knife aimed at Trump’s back here.
The test of leadership for governors is active resistance to federal power like let’s say the FBI comes into Florida to raid someone’s house.
Government should protect life and property will DeSantis tell me Jeb Bush was a coward letting Terri Schiavo die in 2005 and that he would have done something different.
Nor can it just be politicians. Unless we control our own media, entertainment, tech giants, schools and universities, we will lose.
We've had control of the House, Senate, and Presidency, sometimes all at once. Yet they only slowed the decline because we don't control the culture.
“There’s time enough to see about 2028.”
There may not be any time. Esp. since Trump is too old.
There is no time.

Excellent point.
Of course, we’re woefully sad on handling Congress elections. Not enough attention is paid, and this year, too much complacency that there HAS to a “red wave”. It’s weakening back to the normal tide lapping.
As far as culture - I don’t know how we get it back.
In 1938 the German jews probably though that there would be enough time to see about 1942. With the federal Gestapo getting more lawless by the day I'm having trouble imagining what 2028 will be like or rather What I imagine 2028 will be like is grim.
OK. I’m worried about 2028 too but pushing DeSantis does not improve the gestalt.
I do not accept your premise.
Trump is Trump and he has more energy and drive than most 30 year olds. Judging people by their age is balderdash.
One huge difference, Lake spent 23 years working in a private sector career, and didn't spend her entire life working for government.
The more conservatives the better, the water is warm, c’mon in.
Agree. I would like a Trump /Desantis ticket. Donald knows econ/business. I also respect Desantis.
Thats my take on Scott too. I don't think he says anything that hasn't been focused grouped beforehand.
2024 is Trump’s if he wants it, but I agree that DeSantis is the future. He doesn’t just have the right instincts by and large, he is effective. And he isn’t intimidated.
He is next up after Trump. Sadly, I don’t see anyone else. We don’t have a very deep bench yet. Lots of good people getting elected, but no one who is presidential material yet. No more than you can count on one hand if that.
Funny, in 2016, I was impressed at the deep bench on the GOP side, 20 people running, any one of which I thought would make a decent president (at least compared to the Democrats). After covid, I don’t really any once you get past Trump and DeSantis. Between covid and the stolen election, most Repubs have pooped their breeches.
I never tire of a rare politician acting responsibly.
