Maybe... but Donald Trump is still conservatism’s PRESENT.

I don't know this writer's bonafides off-hand, but a fair writeup overall. I have to agree with his take on Rick Scott's personal appeal and awkward, sometimes pandering, style. I found him to be an efficient governor, but has a hard time connecting with regular people -- and his 'optics' are akin to Moloch from The Watchmen.

Yes, with luck and determination, DeSantis is the future. The political right is starving for capable leaders, and Ron DeSantis has emerged as one.

I also had to chuckle about the author's use of 'DEI', which used to be 'DIE' -- "Diversity, Inclusion, Equity". I'd say that acronym was too close to the truth.

I get the impression of a long knife aimed at Trump’s back here.

The test of leadership for governors is active resistance to federal power like let’s say the FBI comes into Florida to raid someone’s house.

Government should protect life and property will DeSantis tell me Jeb Bush was a coward letting Terri Schiavo die in 2005 and that he would have done something different.

2024 is Trump’s if he wants it, but I agree that DeSantis is the future. He doesn’t just have the right instincts by and large, he is effective. And he isn’t intimidated.

He is next up after Trump. Sadly, I don’t see anyone else. We don’t have a very deep bench yet. Lots of good people getting elected, but no one who is presidential material yet. No more than you can count on one hand if that.

Funny, in 2016, I was impressed at the deep bench on the GOP side, 20 people running, any one of which I thought would make a decent president (at least compared to the Democrats). After covid, I don’t really any once you get past Trump and DeSantis. Between covid and the stolen election, most Repubs have pooped their breeches.

I agree that DeSantis is part of the future of the conservative movement’s future. The question is whether 2024 or 2028 is the appropriate time to take the reins.

The Trump vs DeSantis is the media’s dream. Don’t fall for it.

So it's important, the buttkissing?

Maybe he's better and smarter than you.

You somehow need to advertise that you are so very far
below this fine Ascended Being and that others ought to likewise
line up and kiss that booty because he is like unto a God?

What exactly has he done that you couldn't?

Get yourself some self respect and some pride.

DeSantis is not a great public speaker — he talks in prose, not poetry — but what he said was galvanizing. Besides, his actions as governor speak louder than the empty words of other Republican politicians. Talking with conference attendees about the DeSantis speech, I found near-unanimous sentiment that DeSantis should be the 2024 GOP nominee — but also near-unanimous belief that he could not beat Donald Trump in a primary match-up. The feeling is that Trump simply has too great a hold on too many GOP primary voters.

I find this incredibly frustrating. Ron DeSantis sounded many Trumpian populist themes, and has demonstrated in office his ability to use the power of state to make things happen. He knows how to govern in a common sense way, and has proved it. And it's not all about him. If DeSantis is the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, we will have a great national argument about issues. If Trump is the nominee, we will have a great national argument about Trump.
I clicked so nobody else had to, to see the overt anti-Trump garbage. The OP could have posted it. And if Dreher’s name seems familiar, it’s probably because of his tenure at National Review.
