Hello from the third National Conservatism conference, meeting in Miami. Gov. Ron DeSantis addressed the conference on the first night, and blew everyone away. It helped that he followed a dull but half-hysterical rant by Sen. Rick Scott, who fired a barrage of Republican cliches at the audience (watch it here). A conservative writer friend sitting across the room texted me during the speech to joke that this thing was so bad it's causing him to rethink all his convictions.

I’m so glad to be living in Florida.
After Trump spends another four years taking on the corrupt and vile thugs running the deep state, DeSantis will be able to work his magic and bring the country together. For now? Trump has the tools and experience to ferret the creeps out and the hard earned instincts to know how to hit them where it hurts.
When it's time for DeSantis he can hire a speech writer - basically a dime a dozen... or a good rewrite man - to polish up, style up - his well thought out inspired thoughts.
Is that what you said about Biden?
Trump HAS NOW, but how about at 78? And the issue is much more than “energy”, it is mental processes. Biden never had much, but we see how completely stupid he’s gotten. (No offense to the old.) Add to that it is a FACT being “elderly” puts one at considerable risk for sudden decline and death.
Nope, no thanks. I won’t be hypocritical about age being a factor.
Good one.
And that’s what I extra like about DeSantis - truly acting “responsible”. Not shooting off half-cocked. Yet he still gets the job done.
I agree that DeSantis is part of the future of the conservative movement’s future. The question is whether 2024 or 2028 is the appropriate time to take the reins.
The Trump vs DeSantis is the media’s dream. Don’t fall for it.
Right on....best President since Reagan....some think even better than Reagan!!!!
“Maybe... but Donald Trump is still conservatism’s PRESENT”
Agreed
If our PDJT The GOAT doesn’t want it, then DeSantis.
Roll MAGA, roll!
Dreher is a bit of an iconoclast. He was the film critic for the Fort Lauderdale News and Sun Sentinel for a few years. He is…or was…a devout Catholic and could probably be considered something of a Catholic scholar. I don’t know his position on Trump as I lost track of him during those years.
Maybe he's better and smarter than you.
You somehow need to advertise that you are so very far
below this fine Ascended Being and that others ought to likewise
line up and kiss that booty because he is like unto a God?
What exactly has he done that you couldn't?
Get yourself some self respect and some pride.
How exactly do we control things like media, tech giants, etc..?? Control can be anything from outright bans on speech, education subjects, and so on. Where is the line drawn between a outright dictatorship type control verses a free market type of control.
Seems we would need an outright dictatorship to control the culture...and I hope that’s that’s not something you are supporting.
Biden has always been an ass. People are individuals and age is not a a good way to discriminate on talents, energy or effectiveness. While Trump at 78 may not = Trump at 50 I believe h will still be head & shoulders above 99% of folks.
I’ll agree to disagree and wish you freegards.
What is Trump too old for?
DeSantis is not a great public speaker — he talks in prose, not poetry — but what he said was galvanizing. Besides, his actions as governor speak louder than the empty words of other Republican politicians. Talking with conference attendees about the DeSantis speech, I found near-unanimous sentiment that DeSantis should be the 2024 GOP nominee — but also near-unanimous belief that he could not beat Donald Trump in a primary match-up. The feeling is that Trump simply has too great a hold on too many GOP primary voters.I clicked so nobody else had to, to see the overt anti-Trump garbage. The OP could have posted it. And if Dreher’s name seems familiar, it’s probably because of his tenure at National Review.
I find this incredibly frustrating. Ron DeSantis sounded many Trumpian populist themes, and has demonstrated in office his ability to use the power of state to make things happen. He knows how to govern in a common sense way, and has proved it. And it's not all about him. If DeSantis is the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, we will have a great national argument about issues. If Trump is the nominee, we will have a great national argument about Trump.
I thought the answer was obvious. We need to flood the media, tech giants, etc., with our own people. Infiltrate and take over. And also start our own companies.
Where is the line drawn between a outright dictatorship type control verses a free market type of control.
I was suggesting a free market solution. Yet I think many conservatives are too worshipful about the free market. I've long since lost my childish, Ayn Randian love affair with the free market.
I don't give a damn about the "property rights" of the oligarchs in control of Big Tech and Big Media and Big Finance and Big Pharma. You don't get to be an oligarch through honest means, and they're using their power to destroy us.
We're in a cold civil war right now. It might get hot in a few years. The Antifa/BLM death squads are preparing. We're living in Spain, 1935. If a free market solution is available, fine. But I'm also open to an American Franco or Pinochet. Whatever works.
We shall see how DeSantis does this year for reelection. DeSantis faces former Florida Governor Charlie Crist, a political veteran with strong Democratic backing nationally and abundant press support. My guess is that in a Republican year, DeSantis will win, but by a less than impressive margin that does not token well for his national aspirations.
Exactly.
Maybe, but when “conservatism” wins it’s usually conservatism plus something else, some incentive for the undecideds. That’s also true of “progressivism.” Parties win when the other side messes things up so badly that people want a change. Then the winners mistake their win as an ideological victory and take things too far.
When a President is elected and serves his first term, they typically push forward their agenda and “get things done”.
Trump did that.
The second term of a President doesn’t really consist of 4 years like the first.
Usually just 2 years depending on who controls the House and Senate.
But because Trump sat out a second term in a row ( not fairly or willingly of course), Trump, if he decides to run and wins, will enter Oval Office on day One as a Lame Duck.
China will ignore him and wait him out. If the Democrats control just one branch of Congress they’ll do the same and stop all progress. Trump’s strengths in Foreign Policy will be a Dud as he’ll have no support from Congress and countries like North Korea, Russia and Iran only need to wait for his 4 years to be up.
This fact will do 3 things.
Thing 1) It will frustrate and anger Trump as his hands will be tied.
Thing 2) it will be a useless pause in getting this country back to where it was or needs to be.
Thing 3) It might blow out of the water any chance for another strong conservative to become President.
Trump is not use to be ignored. But that is exactly what will happen should he become President without another term possible as he will be a Lame Duck from day one.
