Most Americans are still not persuaded to buy electric cars despite the federal government’s multi-billion dollar push to promote the vehicles.
A majority 54% of American adults think electric cars are not practical, compared to 28% who say they are practical for most drivers, found the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey.
Broken down by party affiliation, 66% of Republicans, 46% of Democrats and 51% of unaffiliated voters said electric cars are not practical.
The Department of Transportation intends to spend almost $5 billion over five years to help states create a network of electric vehicle charging stations.
Meanwhile, a whopping 69% of Americans think most cars will likely still run mostly on gasoline a decade from now, including 37% who say it’s “very likely” that gasoline-powered vehicles will still be the norm in 10 years, according to the survey.
Just 23% think that it is unlikely that most cars will still be powered by gasoline in 2032.
The numbers, which are similar to what the same pollsters found in March, come at a time when California moved forward with plans to ban the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035. Several other Democrat-run states are expected to follow California’s lead.

How ‘bout you RB......your thoughts?
I hate my RINO Senator so much that I am willing to let the Democrat win, so that the Democrat can FORCE me to buy electric vehicles.
That’s how I teach the GOP a lesson!!! Right?
EVs are equal to jabs in my unBucket List
Power outages and brownouts much?
I bet there won’t be a single EV sale in California between now and at least labor day.
I have an electric train in a box in my garage. Does that count?
It isn’t that they are “not ready”, it’s that they don’t want the crap. Too many pictures of them burning up. You know how everything the Snowflake commie libs touch goes to hell? It’s the car manufacturers’ turn.
‘28% say that they are practical for most drivers’ but theyre not most drivers ... TYVM
“The Department of Transportation intends to spend almost $5 billion over five years to help states create a network of electric vehicle charging stations”
Build all the charging stations they want......the grids the problem.....crazyfornia is currently telling people DO NOT charge their battery cars this weekend.
ARE PEOPLE STUPID???........that’s a rhetorical question of course.
EV car battery raw material production destroys the planet, there is not enough power generation and the batteries are not as efficient as fossil fuels in energy produced. During fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods charging power will not be available to evacuate, electric cars are a bad idea.
Misleading headline. App 5% of Americans are in the market for an EV
You’re right, Bob. There are many “principled” FReepers who would rather have us all live in the stone ages rather than vote for a less-than-perfect Republican running against a Marxist Democrat. These repetitive FReepers infect nearly every political thread on this site.
They should do a poll to see how many Americans can only afford a used vehicle in the four digit price range. My guess is around 30%. Those people simply won’t be able to afford to drive if it all goes EV.
Probably the real plan.
Lol… Buy an electric car and as in California they will tell you not to charge it. Grid can’t support it. How did that happen? 🤔 In places where they sometimes need to evacuate from natural disasters, some people will find their vehicles temporarily disabled to avoid traffic jams on the highway. Who gets “left behind”? 🤔 Post “wrong think” on Facebook? They suddenly own the company providing the chargers at the local station. They don’t work for you. Why? 🤔 Later they will tie your ability to use a car to their perception of an overall social score. Who has to get used to walking? 🤔 Didn’t vaccinate for the sixteenth booster for latest version of my asstardpox? Car doesn’t seem to be starting.🤔 The leftist continue to howl “Muh car of the futchaaaaaa….”
That’s why the plan is to make it too expensive to drive an ICE vehicle, between gas prices, insurance and taxes, plus not giving out auto loans on ICE vehicles.
Heck, how many cities have issues when the summer heat has "too many" people running thier AC units?
does not matter
no dissent
resistance is futile
i wouldnt bother buying one
they will become unaffordable anyway
the price and supply of electricity produced from “green” energy will make charging unaffordable/unavailable
only the rich elite will be able to afford personal transportation
for everyone else it is bus bike or a good pair of walking shoes
if you feel like splurging you can hire a rickshaw pulled by a former uber driver
sorry but PETA will get the donkey carts outlawed
they promise the jetsons
you get the flintstones
“ARE PEOPLE STUPID???........that’s a rhetorical question of course.”
But NO!!! They are NOT stupid. The entire purpose of electric cars is to REDUCE TRAVEL, greatly, and with a constrained grid, and the ability to remotely prevent battery charging of EVs, they will achieve that goal.
The goal is now within reach for them.
This time it’s California ‘requesting’ that people not charge their cars this weekend. Once they reach the tipping point, they will no longer be ‘requesting’ anything.
My = muh 😬
“Power outages and brownouts much?”
Consider this scenario.
A mandatory evacuation hits a gulf state or states and everybody with a battery car bugs out at approximately the same time.
Best case scenario there is the batteries were fully charged....at 300 miles out everybody is looking for a way to charge up.
If your fortunate enough to have been able to afford a tesla your gonna need at least 30 minutes to charge up if you can find a tesla supercharger.....you and all the other tesla owners.
In the meantime a cat III+ hurricane is bearing down.
I’m sure there will be no panic. 😏
