We could never get away with doing this to them, even under the guise of ‘creativity’.
Let’s make a movie about slavery in the American South, but without the whipping, the chains, or the cotton picking. Just, you know, happy people in a rural environment. I’m sure no one would protest that it diverged from the source material.
Lordy dem Rangz
There are female dwarves with beards. Yep, they have trans-dwarves.
Tolkien admired the Norse legends and intended his works to serve as a type of mythology for England.
This current Rings prequel looks like a woke mess.
I “get” why people get offended by this sort of thing.
BUT... I have been thinking about this. And have determined the race of the actors in most cases isn’t important.
The problem is .. we Americans tend to view the entire world through the lense of .. America!
we wouldn’t expect a Bollywood movie to have a bunch of white people in all the rolls would we? So when other countries (or in this case cultures) make a movie, they make it with the best actors that they have available nearby.
But Hollywood DOESN’T make their movies with the best available actors. They insist on Affirmative Action.
Recently, one of my millennial age nephews, who also saw the films as a child, read the original books and he was blown away by how much better the book version was.
I have no plans on seeing this more recent bastardization of LOTR.
As an aside, if there are any "Game Of Thrones" fans out there of the TV show, you would do well to read the "A Song Of Ice And Fire" books by George R.R. Martin. Those are the books the TV series is based on (five volumes so far with two more on the way). For me anyhow, it was a very satisfying read. But it will take you a while - it's over 4,000 pages of reading (so far).
that I agree with!
If they are choosing someone of a certain race just to “shake things up” it will usually be garbage.
But if they choose the best actor regardless of their race, it will usually be good.
Having said all that, I get annoyed by nearly all couples in movies being mixed race now, nearly every romantic scene being gay, gays being in nearly 100% of all movies, and women with no super powers throwing MASSIVE men around like stuffed animals.
Do you honestly think they are casting "the best actors regardless of race"? I don't. I think the casting director was told "these characters must be black" and cast them accordingly.
I have no interest in this new series because I know it is going to be a woke crapfest. Same with the Game of Thrones prequel. (Besides the last season of GOT sucked so bad I don't want to see anything associated with it again).
Let's make a movie about the Barbary Pirates of North Africa, Muslim Moors who captured and enslaved over one million white Europeans between the 16th and 19th Centuries.
So the Left reads all literature the same way they read the Constutution?
“(Besides the last season of GOT sucked so bad I don’t want to see anything associated with it again)”
That’s because the last book wasn’t written yet, so they got some hack script writers to put together something to wrap it up.

You listed all the reasons why we don’t even watch modern movies anymore UNLESS we know that none of those things are in the movie. (Although I did like the over-the-top jab on violence movie kill Bill, but that was more, like the old oriental martial arts movies with its over-the-top scenes of impossible feats. Which I don’t mind- it’s when movies try to make it seem realistic that a 90 lb woman can walk into a hells angels bar and whoop everyone in there without breaking a sweat that we don’t care for.)
A remake of “Song of the South”? How about release the original instead of locking it up out of sight?
How about the new Batgirl movie? Are you saying it's a bad movie?
I can’t think of many examples of a movie exceeding the book on which it was based. Some cite The Godfather, claiming that the book was great but the movie was a next-level masterpiece. Perhaps. I’ve heard similar claims about Gone with the Wind. Maybe, maybe not.
Tolkien’s books are certainly a challenge because a fantasy-based world such as his leaves much to the reader’s imagination, and Peter Jackson’s imagination isn’t going to be the same as mine and vice-versa. I certainly felt like Jackson’s LOTR film trilogy wasn’t as enjoyable as the books but it was a decent effort at a film adaptation. Some things that were changed or omitted genuinely bothered me, but I’ve definitely seen worse adaptations. Much worse.
With the deaths of the last of the Tolkien children in 2020 and 2022 respectively, it’s all in the hands of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren now. And we’ve seen the direction that they’re willing to go: a total cash grab with no concerns at all about faithfulness to the source material. I guess that letting Amazon completely bastardize the old man’s stories into a Game of Thrones clone beats working for a living.
I highly recommend that Tolkien fans buy themselves copies of his novels and DVDs of the brilliant Peter Jackson films before the Perverts Of Media (POM™) insist they be edited to change the various characters into transgenders and BIPOCs. BTW, create libraries for yourselves of all soon-to-be-banned literature (i.e. Gone With The Wind, Huckleberry Finn. etc.) and films (Holiday Inn (Bing Crosby in blackface), Swing Time (Fred Astaire in blackface, etc.)). The Left is coming after great works of art that trigger them. Publishers and movie sellers will bend the knee in microseconds.
