New Delhi: Akin to the Berlin blockade of 1948-49, when the United States, United Kingdom, and France had to airlift essential supplies, food and fuel into western Berlin, another airlift is under way on the western borders of Ukraine — albeit for weapons supplies.
From the Amari Air Base in Estonia, cargo planes are being loaded with ammunition and weaponry to be delivered to Ukraine’s armed forces. The NATO has also airlifted tonnes of military equipment into Poland and Romania on the western borders of Ukraine from where the weapons are transported by road into Ukraine.
Since the beginning of the conflict, NATO and the US have reportedly sent in 17,000 anti-tank weapons — these have included Javelin missiles, short-range next-generation light anti-tank weapons (NLAW), and rocket-controlled grenades.
Lieutenant General Deependra Singh Hooda (Retd), former General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Indian Army’s Northern Command, describes supplies on such scale as “unprecedented in short terms”.
While Ukraine’s troops have been credited for using missiles effectively and harsh climate conditions in northern Ukraine have stalled Russia’s march, larger themes amid the current stalemate need to be understood — what are the anti-tank missiles being used by Ukraine? What military strategies has Ukraine used to hold off Russia? What parts of Russia’s military strategy are questionable? What lessons can India draw for its military doctrine?

Turkey and other second tier countries are also producing them.
Using land armies to conquer and control territory is going to get way more difficult as the lessons of Ukraine are applied.
Are tanks becoming obsolete?
Looks like it.
It’s like any technical race. The balance of power may go back and forth. I’m sure there’s a lot of current work on countermeasures to anti-tank weapons.
But even back in WWII days Patton understood that tanks in urban or areas with concealment only survive with aggressive infantry patrolling and combat engineers for mine and IED removal.
Tanks have been obsolete for a while. Except in deserts. They’ve been doing OK in deserts. But the new missiles are ending that. Just too easy to blow em up.
India buys almost all of their military tech from Russia. They must be watching with concern as a smaller force of mostly infantry are turning T-90s into scrap and blowing Su-30s out of the sky.
Have got to believe Russian arms dealers are having trouble selling their crap that fails quite often.
Buy American.
The new Axis of Evil: Russia, China and India
India is not on any “axis of evil” like China and Russia is.
Pakistan is, however.
Generals preparing to fight the previous war.
I think so. What is interesting to me is that sending in thousands of anti-tank missiles to assist Ukraine is no longer considered an act of war. I suppose Russia would rightly be hesitant to declare war on the US and NATO regardless of our materiel aid.
When the Marine Corps got rid of their Abrams MBTs I thought the Marines had made a big mistake.
It appears that, once again, the Marine Corps were ahead of the curve.
Well no matter how the Indian army assesses Russian tank performance there won’t be any new Russian tanks for for sale in the near future as the two factories producing Russian armor have shut down due to sanctions already of foreign supplies of such things as electronics, chips, and ball bearings....nothing runs without ball/roller bearings.
“Non participants” “sell” weapons into wars all the time. It’s never been considered an act of war.
.
We didn't declare war on China when they tossed 200,000 troops into Korea, and just about every scrap of hardware the North Vietnamese had came from China and/or Russia. Has the United State faced an adversary in the last 70 years that wasn't supplied by Russia or China?
Nope. Using tanks stupidly should be obsolete, but seems like people are the problem, as they keep forgetting the lessons.
Tanks are only one part of a COMBINED ARMS approach, and isolated parts of that approach are always vulnerable is the other pieces aren’t providing their supporting roles.
Anyone concerned that all these anti armor and aircraft missiles will be making their way to the terrorists and here to the USA?
Thank you, nice to see from a different perspective.
So far the majority of the tanks destroyed are upgraded T-70 and T-80s with less than 20 older T-90s lost.
Tanks (297, of which destroyed: 126, damaged: 4, abandoned: 42, captured: 125)
Most of the jets lost (16) are SU30SMs, SU-34s, SU-25s
