The holstered firearm was inside the purse Det. Brittney Hilton of the Bridge City Police Department was carrying when the accidental discharge occurred.
“I picked up my bag, my keys were on top,” she said. “As I walked around my desk, my purse swings out and it shoots out the bottom of my bag.”
She heard the sound, but it took a moment for Det. Hilton to realize what happened.

You said, pretty much what I was thinking. If she had a round in the chamber, with the hammer back, yes, it could go off, but you would be right. She shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a handgun. 😀
I don’t buy it. Maybe the ammo? I figure both are about as likely to cause or go off if just sitting there or getting jostled. Maybe she didn’t have it in the holster?

With a good jolt or drop, they can fire. All by themselves with no jolt, highly unlikely
A hammer? I thought Sig’s were striker-fired (like my P365).
I carry with one in the chamber at all times - usually in a pocket sleeve that well covers the trigger. And BTW, mine doesn’t have a manual safety.
I’ve heard of a ‘desk pop’ before but never a ‘purse pop.’
She probably just threw the gun in her purse unholstered and something snagged the trigger. ALWAYS use a holster that covers the trigger, especially when purse or pocket carrying.
Do “Muzzle control” and “Never point a loaded gun at something you don’t intend to shoot” have exceptions when the loaded pistol is thrown into a “pocketbook” or “bag” (presumably containing other objects that could engage the trigger)?
...good point....!!!! I am admittedly not all that familiar with that particular SIG model, but even so, how could the gun simply go off by itself...if it is striker-fired, then it is a DAO gun, no....?? maybe her keys climbed into the holster and they fired the gun.....??!!
Striker fired weapon, the only way it could shoot off a round is if she had a round in the chamber and it was cocked. Or a micro meteorite crashed through every thing in the building and her purse and hit the round primer inside the gun, setting it off.. ahhh. NOPE. 😃. Stupid mistake on her part and shes letting the whole world know what an idiot she is... Instead of just admitting her gun was cocked and loaded around people.
Most firearms are meant to be safe to carry with one in the chamber and this isn’t the first P320 to have a problem with accidental firing. Should a class action lawsuit exempt a company from ALL future claims? Even from people who didn’t get the recall notice?
I know this is a gun porn thread, but how in the world can we determine guilt or innocence without a picture of the FEMALE officer? Preferably the calendar swimsuit issue...
OK, I have only ever fired guns as a hobby, never a professional but on the range we were told never ever charge a round even with the safety on unless you are pointing a gun down range because an accidental discharge was still possible.
Was she being irresponsible having a pre-chambered round that made it possible for this to happen or do cops need to save the half a second it would take to charge the round before deploying it?
