The Delta variant is spreading across the country fast, and Beijing has no answer to the new strain other than draconian, totalitarian brute-force measures—and blaming foreigners.
Millions of Chinese residents are now in various forms of lockdown. The recent infections constitute the most widespread coronavirus outbreak since the disease first hit China, sometime in late 2019.

I like Gordan, but I think the premise is a lot of wishful thinking on his part and not strong analysis.

Highly unlikely. What is more likely is that the lockdowns and travel bans are meant to keep the population from knowing what’s happening in the outside world or from getting any independent ideas.
The so-called Delta variant is even less lethal than the original, which they had exaggerated to begin with. Fear is the best means of control and our masters, both in China and in the West, have made full use of this golden opportunity that has been handed them.

Gordon Chang has been a contrary indicator for 25 years. The opposite of what he predicts happens with regularity.

Maybe they have a different strain?
Gordon has lost so much personally, it can be hard for him to admit how firmly the CCP remains in control and how deeply their use of technology has enhanced their levers of control. The appearance of what escapes from between those levers may appear dramatically rich sometimes, but it is folly to pretend any of it is missed by the CCP or that it does not have counter measures in place to mitigate it.
If the Delta variant could kill the CCP, then let’s create more of them.
Chang sounds optimistic that the COVID viruses will seriously weaken the CCP’s iron-fisted control. Doubt it.
Communist dictatorships have never fallen from natural or even manmade causes. Cuba is still a Stalinist state and Nicaragua is imitating it and has been for decades (after jailing or killing off any democratic opposition). No. Korea is still around after 70+ years. Not going anywhere soon.
Communism is making a strong comeback in Peru, possibly Bolivia, and a few other countries in So. America (remember hardcore reds ran Brazil for many years until their economic policies brought them down, now popular voting).
Xi can let millions of his people die and like Stalin, say, “One death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic. Communists loves statistics. Unfortunately the “people” are the “statistics” while the Party leaders live untouched lives of wealth, power and a “I don’t give a damn about the Blue Ants” mentality.
