All 3 Emerson quotes were way off the mark, but most of the others were outstanding.
Shakespeare’s was my favorite.
I actually think Emerson’s last quote there is OK.
Nobody has much respect for the conformist.
“Nobody has much respect for the conformist.”
It depends on what you/he mean by conformist. Don’t we all conform to some extent?
Conforming to some degree is not the same as being a conformist, someone who does it just to avoid confrontation.
You are special and unique, just like everybody else.

“Individuals entering into society, must give up a share of liberty to preserve the rest.”
“I was not designed to be forced. I will breathe after my own fashion. Let us see who is the strongest.”
Henry David Thoreau
“You’re special!
Just like everyone else.”
I am familiar with Emerson quote number one (from Self-Reliance). In fact I have the quote in a plaque on the wall next to my desk. The expanded quote is as follows:
Great men have always done so, and confided themselves childlike to the genius of their age, betraying their perception that the absolutely trustworthy was seated at their heart, working through their hands, predominating in all their being. And we are now men, and must accept in the highest mind the same transcendent destiny; and not minors and invalids in a protected corner, not cowards fleeing before a revolution, but guides, redeemers, and benefactors, obeying the Almighty effort, and advancing on Chaos and the Dark. |
“The world is made for people who aren’t cursed with self-awareness.”
Annie Savoy, Bull Durham.
“We are all star stuff.”
Delenn, Babylon 5
“You can pick you friends, and You can pick your Nose. . . But you can’t roll your Friends in a little ball and Flick them out of the car window. - Unknown
