Forgiveness - a Vanity

A parable...

Not long after they got married, two newlyweds got into an argument. In the heat of the moment the husband slapped the wife. Horrified over what he had done, he dropped to his knees and begged forgiveness. His wife accepted his apology, they kissed and made up. He never raised a hand against her again.

Over the years they had a happy, if not perfect marriage. They raised children, went on trips, bought a home. The husband worked hard to provide for his wife and family. Occasionally the wife would request something and, if the husband hesitated, she would say "Remember when you slapped me?" The husband would relent and do or give her what she wish.

After a time the wife was not content to use the reminder of the incident to just get her way. She started to use the slap as a way to gain sympathy at her husband's expense. They would be hosting a party and she would say, for all within earshot "My husband slapped me once!" While this elicited pity from the neighbors, it was less directed at the wife and more directed towards the husband, for who would want a wife who airs their dirty laundry in public.

Finally, one day, the husband realized that the slap had permanently damaged their marriage. As long as his wife refused to let the past rest, nothing he could do, nothing he could say, would ever be good enough. Because of his wife's lack of grace, an otherwise good marriage would forever be tainted, doomed to failure, and be loveless.

Remember, while a mistake may be horrific, often the lack of grace, the inability to truly move on, is the greater evil.

It has occurred to me that the state of our nation is like a marriage where one spouse refuses to forgive the other.

The left has decided that our past sins outweigh any good. There have been many apologies for many wrongs - often accompanied by measures to address current inequities. This has led to a grievance culture where complaining about the past leads to power in the present. It is a virtue to bitch and moan.

This, if not addressed, will be the downfall of the Republic.

Except that there’s nothing to forgive. The one’s demanding the apologies are the perpetrators.

One wonders: What, exactly, did she say to him to elicit the slap?

The left has decided that our past sins outweigh any good.

Many on the Left have argued that the South fought the Civil War primarily to preserve slavery, with many Conservatives (in the errant attempt to deflect any residual guilt or shame which might adhere to our Republic) tending to argue that that was not the chief motivation.

But let's assume that the Left was correct.

Then wouldn't it follow that the North's response was motivated primarily by a loathing of slavery?

After all, the North could have simply weighed the costs and benefits of warring with the South and then instead decided to a) release the South and allow it to continue practicing slavery or even to b) allow the South to remain in the Union, while retaining slavery.

But nooo-ooo!

The North was apparently so adamantly opposed to slavery, so loath to tolerate it, that it went to war with the South, resulting in the loss of some 650,000 lives.

So I'd say that, on the whole, America demonstrated that it was more opposed to slavery than it was fond of it.

Regards,

There is decidedly a lack of Christian charity tarnishing our society.
Partly it is the result of people not understanding the difference between “apologizing” and “repenting”.
Bill Clinton was quick to apologize, but his words were empty.
Donald Trump simply changed his life and became a better man.
Big difference.
