I am looking for a book I read about 50 years ago. I found it in a high school library.
It was published after WWII, probably in the 50's or 60's.
The book was a collection of humorous episodes in the life of a senior NCO in the navy.
One episode consisted of him running a lottery.
The main character had rescued a couple of officers at Pearl Harbor, who later became a Captain and Admiral, as I recall.
The NCO ran his little empire out of the incinerator room of the ship he served on, which was either an aircraft carrier or a battle ship, I am not sure. The room might have had a different technical name.
Might have had a different name, but one episode was where he rigged diesel fuel to be sprayed into the smoke stack, putting out black smoke, when it was not supposed to do so (long story why this made sense to accomplish what he was trying to do...)
Any hints as to the title of this book (or even the main character's name) would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Any other titles of humorous military books could be listed as well.
It had some good lessons about human nature and the nature of the U.S. military.
Ping to a naval SME for help.
pinging Mister Roberts and Ensign Pulver.
I know the book you’re talking about, read it a long time ago. The main character was Fatso Something (Italian name?), and I think the author was Daniel Gallery.

Why are there inny’s and outies?
I remember another, similar, book featuring a CPO commanding an LCT(?). He and his crew had numerous adventures running around the Med.
The Author commanded the task group that captured the German submarine U-505
