Here in the United States, there are many issues that people love to debate. While politics tops the list today, there are certainly other issues that could divide the country and leave people flustered and downright hostile. Up there with the best city for pizza or whether baseball should have a designated hitter rule is the issue of “what makes a good home self-defense gun?”

They do.
Look up the SilencerCo Salvo.
The one you have right now, in your hands or on your person. The rest are junk until you are within arms reach.
I like post #2, the one in your hand, but my gun of choice is a pump shotgun. Mine happens to be 16 gauge, because I got a good deal 30 years ago. At home defense range even if I run out of buckshot, the #5 shot I also have will do the job. 15 feet away it’s still less than a foot wide pattern. Bird shot would work.
More recently I snagged a 9mm, which one I would grab depends on whether I have time to plan or have to grab and fire. In a pinch, it’s the shotgun. Last thing a burglar wants to hear is when I rack one into the chamber. That’s why it’s the only one in the house without a round already there.
For the beginner, definitely shotgun, and get some practice using it. A pump can fire almost as fast as a semi auto, if you know how to use it. I’ve been called on that one, I can back it up.
You want to know how freakin LOUD the thing is, and how hard it hits your shoulder. I fired a 22 pistol in the cab of a truck one day. (22 Llama semi auto, snake in a ditch). Sounded like a damn hand grenade...didn’t do that again...
“Preparedness and practice.”
This.
If a shotgun is good enough for Jill Biden its good enough for me.
Under a high stress situation where you feel you have to use a gun, you will barely notice the sound. Really.

I know it’s a gag but the reality of what a plasma rifle would do is just the opposite.
The human body being mostly water would explode like can of spray paint in a fire.
Water expands 1700 times as it goes from liquid to gas.
Just imagine the water inside a human skin changing from liquid to gas in a fraction of a second.
It would be quite messy. I would not want to be in the same room.
Place all bullets in center body mass, they don’t tend to leave the walls then. /s
870 pump works well. 00 buck, or 00-slug-00-slug-00-slug. Mix and match for your preference.
Firing a weapon indoors is dangerous to your own hearing. If you are surprised at home, you may not want to take the time to put on hearing protection - and there may be tiny other people nearby who do not understand enough to put on hearing protection. Hence, a suppressor.
One that works.
You know your house better than the intruder. A surprise visit from a Louisville Slugger also works.
I put earplugs in all my gun cases along with speed loaders or extra magazines as required for the particular pistol. I don’t want to be deafened into just one shot. Alas then I lost them all in a boating accident.
No, but I will suggest. He bought me a 38special. Is what you are recommending easier, perhaps?
or a 20 ga for the ladies at home alone - or if you’re older.

There’s never any love for the semi-auto shotgun in these threads so I’m gonna give it some. I’d take a Benelli M4 over an 870 any day.
