Here in the United States, there are many issues that people love to debate. While politics tops the list today, there are certainly other issues that could divide the country and leave people flustered and downright hostile. Up there with the best city for pizza or whether baseball should have a designated hitter rule is the issue of “what makes a good home self-defense gun?”

I hate to agree with Bidet, but a shotgun is a good place to start. Especially I you are in a suburban setting and don’t want to send bullets through your neighbor’s walls if you have to use the weapon. A short, pump or semiautomatic shotgun is tough to beat.

One that you are comfortable using. That is a discovery that you will have to decide on without depending on others. If you have arthritis it will be different than someone who doesn’t. Handgun vs rifle, etc. If a gun works for others, it doesn’t mean that it will work for you.

A gun in the closet or gun safe that you don’t feel comfortable using is a waste of money. It is also very dangerous for the rest of us, because if you don’t defend your house and the criminal(s) take your gun after they kill you, then they now have additional guns and ammo.

Once you get it, keep it clean and practice several times a year with it to stay competent in its use.
