On Monday, Starlink the space based internet service from SpaceX an Elon Musk company began to notify people via email that they've been selected for public Beta Testing...
The service will cost $99/month with speeds of 50 to 150 Mbs....with a latency of 20-40ms.....
There is a additional $499 charge for the equipment that includes the self-aligning dish and in home router....along with a mounting tripod...
An additional $99 is available for roof mounted dishes.
Users were also told to expect increases in speed and lower latency as more satellites get deployed...
You need a clear view of the Norther Sky at the current time...
“You need a clear view of the Northern Sky at the current time...”
I assume that means your SOL during cloudy/overcast/rainy days?
according to the information provided, the clear view of the northern sky is means no trees, buildings or other obstructions, no mention of weather was talked about
I’m mostly tech illiterate. Does 50-150 give one the ability to do what the average Internet Joe spends most of their time doing... streaming Hulu?
Also, if a clear sky is required, this could turn out to be about as reliable as wind turbines.
Clouds don’t block the signal but buildings and trees do.
This is basically making you a direct up-link, you are your own provider. It cuts out con-cast
Rather expensive. Probably fine for country dwellers who have no other high speed options.
Not a bad price considering that you can be almost anywhere....
Huh? Additional to what? Available from who?
Yes it more than adequet for most people. If you have multiple people in a household all doing there own thing then it could be a problem.
Yes. Those mbps are more than adequate for the average household.
In addition to the dish and router and available from Starlink...
Not weather dependent, but $99/month is too steep for me. Give me <$50 and I’ll do it. Then again, I guess I can have it at my vacation house and other house so, maybe it is affordable. I’ll have to look into it a little more.
50 would allow something like 10 HD simultaneous HULU streams. The latency would mean gamers would be able to use the service and have decent ping times. As far as weather, it may impact speed during storms but I dont know how much. I suspect you wont be able to get 10 streams but surely 3 or 4 during anything short of a hurricane.
The technical term is “rainfade.”
I pay $79/month in eastern Washington for 18Mbs download 10Mbs upload.
I just signed up and they replied they would be contacting me.
No way. Hughsnet costs 7 to 8 grand for their dish, and then again their monthly rate. This is dirt cheap.
> Additional to what? <
Evidently you get a tripod-mounted dish as part of the deal. I dont know where you live, but in my neck of the woods that tripod would probably be stolen before the week was out.
And now the details. Most of my neighbors are honest people. But some of their kids are not.
My service is currently wireless and I have an external antenna mounted on my TV antenna. I have had no weather issues in the 2+ years of service
I have a perfect clear view of the northern sky as well
No,. 75+ terabytes a month is common for cord cutters.
My MIL just got this and her service sucks. She lives on the other side of town and we tried to get her to get the same service as us, but she went with Hughes and their 2 year agreement
