My MIL just got this and her service sucks. She lives on the other side of town and we tried to get her to get the same service as us, but she went with Hughes and their 2 year agreement
I think Hughes uses geosynchronous satellites that are 22 thousand plus miles up.
Lots of lag time and timing issues.
Starlink is hundreds of low Earth orbit satellites that should have more than one overhead at any given time.
When done, I think there’ll be over 1,000.
Can even be used to supplement GPS satellites.
The service only started on Monday, how could she possibly have the service, besides we are talking about Beta Testing , not full blown internet service....Beta testing means just that testing to find out the flaws and get them fixed before going public
No she did NOT get "this". She got internet from a geosynchronous satellite 22,400 miles up. Any call to the internet require 4 round trips between her dish and the satellite which means nearly 100,000 miles of travel. Even at the speed of light, the lag this introduces makes the whole system "suck".
Starlink uses much lower satellites and the lag, which is called "latency" is much, much better.
This is a boon to rural internet users. Right now, I pay $79/mo for 12 MBPS down and 4 up. And that is advertised speeds on a good day. The reality is less, although it has been improving lately, probably because they hear Elon's competition coming up on them.
