On Monday, Starlink the space based internet service from SpaceX an Elon Musk company began to notify people via email that they've been selected for public Beta Testing...
The service will cost $99/month with speeds of 50 to 150 Mbs....with a latency of 20-40ms.....
There is a additional $499 charge for the equipment that includes the self-aligning dish and in home router....along with a mounting tripod...
An additional $99 is available for roof mounted dishes.
Users were also told to expect increases in speed and lower latency as more satellites get deployed...
You need a clear view of the Norther Sky at the current time...
Well I did say over 1,000.... ;-)~
I think the speed of light is constant. The difference between a thin atmosphere like Earth’s and the vacuum of space would not be detectable.
30-40,000 would be too much. There’s already too much space debris out there already. They’d be crashing into that and possibly each other.
I say this as someone who worked in space operations tracking space stuff when stationed at Cheyenne Mountain, Pave PAWS radar, and the Defense Satellite Station in Woomera, Australia over an eight year period.
The junk in space we tracked was the biggest percentage of our tracking, and our services were absolutely vital to space operations.
It’s only gotten worse since I went into Intelligence Services in 1984.
I have to use Verizon Wireless as my internet provider. I got a pretty good plan. I have a Home Phone Connect setup which is essentially a receiver, wifi router and home phone unit. Under their plan I have the Home Phone Connect and 6 smart phones on it. It is unlimited, but I get 22G on each line before they throttle back the speeds. We don’t do Netflix or Hulu on the plan because they would rip into the 22G quickly. I pay $110 a month currently for this plan. Verizon doesn’t offer it anymore and several Verizon representatives have told me do not let anyone talk you into changing your plan.
If this new service eventually cuts its start up costs and doesn’t throttle the user speeds it could become viable to us country folks.
It sure is... they just lost me and I am a country dweller. It will never happen at that price no matter how fast it is. I was afraid they were going to over price it and they did.
Starlink already has over 800 LEO satellites up there, with a 1-2 launches of 60 per month scheduled

The massive satellite fleet is also worrisome for other rocket companies.
SpaceXs Starlink isnt the only internet constellation in the works, Amazon and OneWeb are also planning their own internet beaming services. Rocket Lab CEO, Peter Beck, says the company is starting to feel the effects of congestion in outer space.
The sheer number of objects in space is quickly skyrocketing as more and more small satellites are launched. In turn, that ever-increasing amount of space traffic is making it difficult to find a clear launch path. Thats because outer space is largely an unregulated territory. The last major piece of global space legislation the outer space treaty was written five decades ago and does not address the growing commercial rocket industry.
Researchers have warned for decades that this could one day be a substantial issue. In fact, the International Space Station has had to conduct maneuvers to avoid potential collisions with space debris three times so far in 2020. NASA and other space agencies around the world are working on developing missions where debris and defunct satellites can be trapped or even safely moved to another position.

I’m not opposed to Starlink. In fact, I want to be a subscriber.
However, the issue of space congestion in low Earth orbit is a thing now, and will get worse.
OOOOOOOOOOOOh yeah...was braggin’ time if you had a T1 line...Can also remember having laptop in Antigua with a 12K dialup that I left on all weekend...Went to check out and they presented me with a $2260.00 bill......Manager said it MUST be a glitch and charged me $29.00. 12 K dialup...Jeez...now 118GB with a 24GB upload!!
No she did NOT get "this". She got internet from a geosynchronous satellite 22,400 miles up. Any call to the internet require 4 round trips between her dish and the satellite which means nearly 100,000 miles of travel. Even at the speed of light, the lag this introduces makes the whole system "suck".
Starlink uses much lower satellites and the lag, which is called "latency" is much, much better.
This is a boon to rural internet users. Right now, I pay $79/mo for 12 MBPS down and 4 up. And that is advertised speeds on a good day. The reality is less, although it has been improving lately, probably because they hear Elon's competition coming up on them.
Just have to install a dish antenna to the top of your car and away you go. I get 100 mgb service from Spectrum for $49.00 a month already and before 5G comes on line I can already get access almost anywhere I go. This will be a boon to those living in remote areas but at that $99.00 price it can't compete anywhere else.
I clarified this on post #35. I was responding to the Hughes net post. That is what she got.
If you read my other posts, you will see that I signed up to be a BETA tester for STARLINK and would be excited to get it!
interesting
The dish costs $350 and you can lease it instead of buying it.
Standalone (no cable tv) through spectrum where I am is 90 bucks a month for the cheapest.
No problem. This will be key to my future plans to become a mountaintop hermit.
Depends where you live I guess. I am in Southern Oregon about a 20 minute drive from town and still get cable service. They offer business service at 200mgb supposedly for $69.00 including unlimited phone service. They also offer unlimited Cell Service and data for $45.00 and a buy the by the gig plan at $14.99 which includes unlimited txt and phone. Spectrum also has some free steaming but I haven't check that out since I have way more than I can watch already.
i was confused...i have xfinity. But they have 0 competition around here. Wish I could get your prices!
This reminds me, I've got to switch broadband vendors...
[[But Im of an age and background to remember 1.44Mbs T-1 as blazing fast. Lol.]]
We got 400 or so kbs over land phone line
does it include Showtime and Fox News?
