A hundred years ago this week, a series of biggest battles that Europe were to witness between the end of the First World War in 1918 and the beginning of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 decided the fate of the continent as much as, if not more than, the Great War itself. In early August 1920, the newly resurrected, independent Poland saved the Eastern Europe, Germany and possibly the rest of the war-exhausted Europe from the triumphant Russian communism. As a result of a little known war in the distant corners of the continent, the status quo of the East was preserved for another two decades.

Poland has saved Europe many times throughout history.
Gates of Vienna?
Routing the communists in the 1920s?

Poland saved Europe and Western culture when the Poles, not the French, Germans or English, attacked and routed the Turks that were laying siege to Vienna.

The common narrative is that Poland fell to the Nazi's with little resistance when the opposite is true. Poland was over-matched but their resistance disturbed Germany enough that they delayed further military expansion for six months while they evaluated their plans.

Poland was invaded on both sides, by the Germans and the Russians.
Yet they continued to fight, over the English skies, and at Monte Cassino.

Polish soldiers who fought at Monte Cassino were no ordinary conscripts, drafted and sent to Italy. Most had been forcibly removed from their homes by the Russians, sent to Siberia to labour camps, endured near starvation and escaped on foot to Iran to join the Free Polish Forces as part of the Allied effort. They really DID believe – Monte Cassino, 18 May – Polish at heart
