They say the first step is admitting you have a problem. I think many readers of this article will respond with outrage, and many will see it says things they already knew to be trueand I think these two groups will largely overlap. The most powerful obstacle to confronting a destructive addiction is denial, and collectively we are in denial about pornography.
Since it seems somehow relevant, let me state at the outset that I am French. Every fiber of my Latin, Catholic body recoils at puritanism of any sort, especially the bizarre, Anglo-Puritan kind so prevalent in America. I believe eroticism is one of Gods greatest gifts to humankind, prudishness a bizarre aberration, and not so long ago, hyperbolic warnings about the perils of pornography, whether from my Evangelical Christian or progressive feminist friends, had me rolling my eyes.
Not anymore. I have become deadly serious. A few years ago, a friendunsurprisingly, a female friendmentioned that there was strong medical evidence for the proposition that online pornography is a lot more dangerous than most people suspect. Since I was skeptical, I looked into it. I became intrigued and kept following the evolving science, as well as online testimonies, off and on. It didnt take me long to understand that my friend is right. In fact, the more I delved into the subject, the more alarmed I became.
The central contention of this article is that, however we might feel morally about pornography in general, a number of features about pornography as it has actually existed for the past decade or so, with the emergence of Tube sites that provide endless, instant, high-definition video in 2006, and the proliferation of smartphones and tablets since 2007, is fundamentally different from anything weve previously experienced.
PING!
Spoken out of sheer ignorance. Pick up a copy of John Owen's "Mortification of Sin" and then we can talk.
Prostitution is not legal, so why is porn? In both, people get paid for sex. But one is criminal, while the other is so-called “free speech”.
This should be a fun thread, if it stays up.
Hes French and Catholic, so I can understand why all forms of sex outside of marriage are holy.
Wait, there is a porn epidemic?
Why was I not told?
With proof!
Throughout history, it has been legal far more often than not.
In fact, there have been very few places that prostitution was completely illegal for very long.
I am not sure it should be legal... but, in fact, it very seldom has been completely illegal.
Yep, always ends well, doesn't it?
“We've banned porn to protect the children.” “We've banned anything that counters our global warming/cooling/change (especially anything mocking that we changed what it was multiple times) to protect the children.”
Wanna actually affect change? Put a HUGE dent in the damage pornography does? Give parents back the right to discipline their children. Allow schools to once again manage students.
We ban pornography of many types already. In fact, some of it is banned world wide, especially child porn. There’ll be close to 450 prosecutions this year of people possessing, distributing or creating child pornography.
It doesn't stop it from happening. Our problem isn't what is available for consumption, it is the people doing the consumption. I'm firmly convinced that our no-hands policy for disciplining children, our schools with every hand tied behind their back, etc, is creating the problem.
Safer than marriage for a great deal of men.
And dildos and vibrators and womens porn are nowhere mentioned.
You want to talk about objectification and desensitization, lets start talking about how gynosociety has turned men into atms and sperm donors and items to be discarded and interchanged at any time she wants to, for any reason.
...... if it stays up.
That is a major factor.
What is a self-governing people to do if they want to maintain the pursuit of happiness as meant by those who precede us from times of old? We cannot do whatever we please whenever we wish, even though the sentiment to cut loose pulls strongly within each individual.
I for one welcome our artificially intelligent pleasure bot overlords.
I read it. I also copied it for later sharing. This is a big deal. Without mentioning paedophilia this writer explains the explosion of paedophilia/paederasty and child and woman trafficking in the modern world.
Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
This from a lifelong bachelor who was roundly rejected by every woman he ever dated (briefly, always briefly). And no, I don’t look like Quasimodo. I am neither deformed, demented, nor destitute.
At 62, I feel I may have dodged a bullet, after all the horror stories I’ve read about dudes getting raped in divorce court just because their wives got bored and wanted to $%#* other dudes.
After a while you get tired of having your married friends introduce you to one of their unmarried female friends. The date invariably goes badly, then word gets back to your married friends, putting at least a temporary strain on what had previously been a perfectly sound relationship.
I am nothing if not a perfect candidate for the “friend of the family” role. Every family needs an eccentric bachelor uncle.
Still, all the rejection is hard on your self-image — and there’s this little business that desire for companionship is just part of being a normal human.
But we sure don’t live in normal times.
“This should be a fun thread, if it stays up”
If it stays up longer than 4 hours call your doctor. ;<)
Do we need pics here?
The resolution of your dilemma comes by making them both free. THere’s no putting the genie back in the bottle.
