So one of my favorite times of the year is getting an extra hour of sleep due to giving back the extra hour of daylight that we got back in April.
I'm a big proponent of Daylight Savings Time. Having that extra hour of daylight during warmer months is so important, especially for working people, who really benefit from the longer day.
I don't think I can convey in words how much I love Daylight Savings time and changing the clocks twice a year. It would be a much sadder world if we did not have a way to bring in extra daylight during the summer months.
From about mid May to mid September, I get home from work with ample daylight left and I get to putting a steak on the grill and having a beer or two while sitting on my patio, waiting for the fireflies to come out.
Thank you to Daylight Savings time for making that possible.
But now it's time to give that extra daylight back. Which is okay by me because it's getting too cold to sit out on that patio anyhow.
Starting Monday, I come home to total darkness as our days are now shorter but that's okay. I will be hanging up some Christmas lights (inside) this weekend and that will brighten my mood considerably. I always do Christmas lights floor to ceiling in the house and have them on through Super Bowl Sunday.
So I actually like the shorter days during the winter months. When it is dark and cold outside, you just want to crank up the fireplace, sit in a comfortable chair and spend a few hours reading a good book.
Also tonight, I get that extra hour of sleep as the day is 25 hours long. I wonder what I am going to dream about!
Two of my favorites days of the year is when the clocks change. In April, we make the day longer and in early November, we make the day shorter. All in balance.
Also, the angle of the sun is much lower this time of year so the sunlight comes through the windows most of the day (my condo faces the South). So even though it's colder outside, there is warmth on the inside. And when the sun goes down, the Christmas lights come on. So I can deal.
I have to give special thanks to Benjamin Franklin for coming up with a way to extend the daylight during the warmer months of the year.
For example,in Singapore the sun rises and sets at the same time every day of the year.
What I can’t stand is waking up at 2:00 am and messing with the dang clocks!
You should try my new miracle diet.
I just lost ten pounds in under a minute by adjusting my bath room scales.
The days will not be any shorter.
“Thanks to the taxidermist, she will always live!”
LOL!!!
Except Ben Franklin was joking when he wrote about this.
It is a dumb idea that we should stop. After the government falls and the subsequent civil war, its the first thing we should address.
I look on it as a celebration of the power of government, because what else could possibly hold the sun up for an entire hour? Praise the Government!
It’s “Daylight Saving Time”. There is only one “s”
Its winter. With or without ridiculous daylight savings time the days will be shorter
Correct, of course.
But it gets dark earlier in the day.
> “days will now be shorter”
>> Is that because of climate change?
If this trend continues we’ll be in total darkness in just 3 years!
HOW DARE YOU!
I like it when we turn the clocks back one hour. I think we should do that every Sunday.
> If I go to bed at 11:00 PM, do I turn the hands on the clock to 10:00 PM or to 12:00 AM?
I think you have to get up at 1:59am and change it then.
Remember: Spring forward, Fall back. Or move to Arizona.
No wonder I don't know how this DST works. :-)
This will be a new experience for me. I moved to Panama this summer and they do not recognize DST. Therefore, most of the year I am aligned with Central Daylight Time in the U.S. but I will transition to Eastern Standard Time when the U.S. changes back.
I wonder how my phones/computers will react to this?
BTW, we get bright, intense sunlight each morning starting between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. It is difficult to tell when dusk occurs because there is normally clouds and rain in the late afternoon. The locals have adapted to this because many still have rural jobs and, in the rainy season, they are often finished by 3 p.m. when the rains come down.
Yeah, once you're retired, you can pretty much ignore clocks and calendars (except for those occasional pesky doctor appointments, or if you want to show up at church when other folks are there too, or remember your spouse's birthday on the right day, or other stuff like that).
At other times, retirees can take many different approaches to these twice-yearly clock adjustments. For example, they can rebel against it, and just turn the clock back a half an hour. Or they can turn their calendar back a month instead. Or they can get one of these clocks shown below, and have a little fun with it.) :-)
If the Democrats get their way, the lights will go out all over America...
...except in the lavish mansions of the Democrat politicians, of course.
I hate daylight savings time.
Very difficult to get a perfect medium rare steak on the stove top - which is how most people like it. I get best results by searing it in a cast iron (5 minutes a side) and then putting into a 400 degree oven until internal temp hits about 120. Then I pull it out and during the resting period it will get to around 130 degrees.
