Remember that gas leak one Sunday morning in Howard County, MD a couple of months back? Small leak coming from a crack in the parking lot of a shopping center. The shopping center got totaled. Imagine an underground fire cobwebbed through the sewer mains, and finding a weak pipe.

That’s a storm drain.
There’s all kinds of flammable materials that end up in storm drains.

In other news: The drug laced poop that is on fire will turn the balance of califoricate citizens into zombies.

It’s all the excess ‘urban outdoorsmen’ shit getting washed downstream from San Fagcisco. Methane and Wild Irish Rose don’t need much prodding to spontaneously combust. A few dumpster-dive burritos from Taco Bell would be like a match to the powder. *BOOM*

I guess some on the ground experience in the territory makes this a little easier to speculate on...

You have to understand that first and foremost, the Porter Ranch area is built on a hillside, there are deep gullies separating the various fingers of urban development. In those gullies are thick swaths of vegetation, not just quick burning grass, but thick chaparele. Those chaparele are like blow torches when the Santa Anas combine with the winds created by the fire.

Also in those same ravines are drainage pipes that empty the storm drains you see in that video. The thickest vegetation is nearest the drain pipes (they get watered the most, of course.) The fire’s wind and the Santa Anas blow those flames down those tunnels and out drains. (Well, more honestly, combustible gasses released by the flaming vegetation, but you get the picture.)

The first time I ever saw that in person was during the Sunland fire; all of a sudden a fire engine reported that they were on fire, well away from the flames defending a shopping center. A blow torch of fire ignited the tires and then spread to the rest of the engine.

When a wildfire hits an orchard it will burn the PVC pipe like a candle wick. Spooky.

Someone will need to go underground to investigate and repair after they get the fire out.

If you zoom out and around you can see the Porter ranch shopping center.
That land was very hilly and windy. I rode my bike there many years ago. Amazing construction since. Flatten a square mile for the shopping center. They built this and several thousand homes and are still building.

You can move to the top and right a bit and see the former Nike missile site

Yeap. I was born here and still live near by. Moving in two years. Though I know every trail around there. I’ve been to that base.
