The idea behind fast food is speed and efficiency. When it comes to fast-food chains, McDonalds is always on the cutting edge of getting people fed quicklytoo quickly, some say.
In the rush to gobble down food, much of the joy of eating is lost. Fast food is a soulless commodity that neglects the spiritual appreciation of flavor and taste. It can turn what should be a dining place into a biological fueling station.
The bad news is that it has just gotten worse.
Just when you think the fast-food giant has reached a peak of efficiency, it comes out with something that challenges the existing order of things. These changes supposedly adapt to new consumer demand for speed and efficiency.
The next new thing is called McDonalds to Go. It has just opened several locations in England including one on the fashionable Fleet Street in the heart of London. It will presumably roll out to other places if it proves popular.
The new format strips the bare bones down to the barest bones. No humans are allowed to take the orders of hungry consumers upon entering. Technology dominates everything as interaction with machines is the rule. Promoters call it the best thing since the drive-thru was introduced in the seventies.
What you wont see at the new McDonalds to Go are any dining facilities. The new format is exclusively take-out. There are no tables, chairs or any decoration at the locations. The walls are gray and expressionless to get the customer in and out as quickly as possible. Even the storefront outside is bare with minimal signage beyond some small yet familiar golden arches.

Depressing stuff from the global corporations.
PING!
If you demand workers get a minimum wage you wind up with machines doing the work. Simple math
If grouchy old John Horvat II doesn’t like it he can still go to a fancy restaurant.
“Depressing stuff from the global corporations.”
LOL! we’ve had vending machines since the dark ages!
I will miss the brawls on Youtube.
Oh well, there’s still Chucke E Cheese.
I agree. There’s a niche for places like McDonald’s and another for places like Five Guys.
Call me crazy, but I don’t get warm fuzzies dining in a McDonalds. If I’m going to have Mickey-D’s I’m fine with taking it home. In fact, that’s mostly what I do now.
Enjoy your *BIG ASS FRIES*!
The original McDonalds, like the present day Sonics, were take out only. You can get your food quickly and still enjoy a leisurely meal in your car, or take you f back home or to work. Nothing new here.
I get that the author is upset, but goodness gracious, go calm down, dear. Perhaps a nice Restorative Beverage would help.
Some people sit around and eat food at McDonald’s. Some people sit around so long that the staff ask them to leave! Okay, you don’t like the food. Neither do I, but I didn’t like a lot of what my mother cooked at home, either, especially when Dad was at sea and she was practicing frugality.
Carry-out food sellers have been a feature of urban life for as long as urban life has existed. Poor, city people couldn’t cook at home in the bad old days, because they’d burn their whole city block down and thousands would die. A writer with “Tradition” in his website title should know this stop and desist from hyperventilating about takeout food.
McDonald’s basically started because Ray Kroc sold them a machine to automate making shakes.
There’s basically just a few things I want when I got to a place like McDonalds:
I want my food, fast.
I want it hot and (some reasonable approximation of) fresh.
I want my order filled correctly.
Don’t care about decor or signage, and I can’t remember the last time I actually ate in a McDonalds restaurant. OK, that’s not true, I actually ended up there several times while on a motorcycle tour recently. But as a general rule I’m just hitting the drive-thru.
I agree. I actually like McD's food, but the only reason I would eat inside, is if I was trying to waste time & wanted to use their WiFi. Even then, if you park close enough, you can get WiFi in the parking lot.
“...but I dont get warm fuzzies dining in a McDonalds. If Im going to have Mickey-Ds Im fine with taking it home. In fact, thats mostly what I do now.”
Given a few of the McDonald’s I’ve been in over the last few years, keeping their dining area clean is not a high priority. You’re better off taking it home and eating it.
So what does a Robot Spit onto your food, it’s nuts?
We had that in Denton, Texas 5 years ago. Drive-thru only.
I like it. No one to spit on your food...................
“If you demand workers get a minimum wage you wind up with machines doing the work. Simple math”
indeed. i’ve been predicting totally automated fast-food restaurants and coffee shops for several years now because of the cost, hassles, and shortage of labor ...
