Windows 10 And All Browsers Are Repeatedly Crashing

Help!

I have a three week old HP laptop that was working beautifully until the Microsoft update on 27 August 2019. Since then my browser tabs have been crashing repeatedly throughout every session, and periodically, the computer crashes too.

I'm a simple user with just enough savvy to post here and build simple websites. I don't have the skills to sort this out, and need some help, please.

I've already tried doing a system restore to an earlier date, but the computer keeps crashing before it completes. I've run CCleaner and Malwarebytes too many times to count. I've sent countless crash reports to Mozilla and Microsoft, to no avail.

I even uninstalled Ghostery and AdBlock Plus, thinking that they might be the culprits, but no joy with that, either.

Is anyone else on the board having similar issues? Do any of you have a suggestion as to how I can fix this?

Before you go there, I realize that Linux is one solution, but I'm too old and sick (with cancer) to rise to the challenge of that learning curve right now. I just want the damn thing to work like it did when I first set it up three weeks ago.

Coincidentally, I bought this computer to replace another clinically insane HP laptop!

Since the update I have had problems also but not browser problems.

My thoughts for you are to explore your computer’s power settings and avoid sleeping or screen savers.

My problems were based on keeping windows from sleeping so that my security camera would upload video on Onedrive.com

Resolved all but one of my problems by using Device Manager to keep all Human and wireless devices from sleeping and re positioning my USB cords to different ports as Windows 10 update seems to affect USB 2.0 usb ports incorrectly.

My final problem now and was that while my video upload problem has gone I still have the computer being in and endless loop heating up the computer and preventing any input from keyboard or mouse. This maybe happening when the monitor shuts down as it does not happen now from the screen saver timing.

I am looking on this thread to address it.

I don’t know of anything offhand, however I avoid HP since Fiorina like the plague. They have been crap ever since. I can build a better ghetto box out of an old used Dell and make it run faster and more reliably than any HP pc.

What was the error message? Did you go to event logs? There is a program called event viewer that often can help identify the error and give you a code for searching solutions.

Edition: Windows 10 Home Version: 1809 Installed on: 8/1/2019 OS Build: 17763.195

The above shows you did do a roll back. Our PC is running version 1903 (Run winver). And all browser and profiles 7 or more) run fine even with over 500 tabs open. Thanks be to God. See thread Custom build you own modern computer (new Ryzen CPU) for under 400.00

I see that you had posted on Windows 10 KB4512941 (Build 18362.329) is causing high CPU usage (Cortana eats 40% of your CPU)

Your motive is good, but the OP had stated

Before you go there, I realize that Linux is one solution, but I'm too old and sick (with cancer) to rise to the challenge of that learning curve right now. I just want the damn thing to work like it did when I first set it up three weeks ago.

But i am sure we here are sorry to hear Windflier has the big C. May you find the grace of God in Christ to handle this trials, and come out of it blessed.

I read somewhere that after that last update, cortana is taking up to 40% of your computer’s resources...also, the update before that hosed all the files on my hard drive...so make sure you have backups... the new (diverse) microsoft products are getting worse.

If you have chrome, firefox, opera, IE, and Edge all crashing. You have a low level networking issue OR malware.

One thing to try is actually upgrading to the latest and greatest version of windows10. I know there were issues for some people (I didn’t have those issues). but since you’re having problems upgrading may solve your issue.

I fixed my problem with changing a value in registry that was causing the Cortana high CPU/Memory usage.

All’s well now.

Resolved all but one of my problems by using Device Manager to keep all Human and wireless devices from sleeping Then you must have chosen to deselect "Allow

Windows to turn off.." for all such. This may help. Caffeine is a free and portable tool which can prevent your PC from going into sleep mode.

Their website is strangely opaque for an Austin, TX, startup and doesn’t sound quite totally American in its conventions and use of English. They have an affiliate program that pays sites for signing up new users and something just doesn’t feel right about it. Then I found this: https://borncity.com/win/2018/03/26/is-flashpeak-inc-shipping-slimjet-browser-with-a-backdoor/

Good detective work

Try setting up a new partition on your hard drive and run Windows 7 until they fix 10.

a few thoughts
your system likely has a bios level hardware checker, run it to make sure you don’t have a memory or cpu issue.

post the blue screen code and associated text, you’ll need a pad and pen to write it down.

update all your drivers, I use drivereasy,

There have been reports of issues with some systems likely yours is on the list. If all else fails you’ll need to get your data off and use HP’s restore to factory new (again a bios level thing.

One thing to try is use the task manager to kill processes, and stop start up programs. I’d kill as many as possible (all non microsoft or AMD) Kill the start up items, reboot, kill the processes, then try using internet explorer, you’ll find it in windows accessories in the programs list. since IE is the same program used to search your computer it should be ok.

the task manager is accessed using ctr alt del

Among the litany or error messages that always has shown i get that one also, but it does not seem to have any negative affects:

The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch permission for the COM Server application with CLSID Windows.SecurityCenter.WscDataProtection and APPID Unavailable to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Component Services is an MMC snap-in to configure COM components, COM+ applications, and more. Run comexp.msc

Thanks for the link.

I had been using Google’s Chrome for years but noticed it was getting slower & more bloated. Then I discovered it had been adding tracking software.

I discovered Slimjet from another freeper and tried it - MUCH faster.

I run MalwareBytes and no virus has ever been found.

ps: I’ve tried FF, Brave, Vivaldi, etc - all run as slow and bloated as Chrome.
