More SCA Mailbag: “You are absolutely correct, the SCA is a cult..”

Ann,

My husband and I have been in the SCA for many years and have been re-thinking our membership lately for a number of reasons. You are absolutely correct, the SCA is a cult, but it is a very subtle one.

First, I must point out (and this isn’t meant as a blanket defense of the SCA) there are plenty of conservative folks in the organization, like my husband and myself. I read your post about the SCA after seeing a near-hysterical rant about it on FB from a lady who, to my knowledge, is not a swinger; there are a lot of people in the SCA who aren’t. It’s entirely possible they are unaware of a lot. There are many women in the SCA who enjoy hand sewing, costuming, and cooking — and that’s all (although it’s hilarious listening to them sit around, hand sewing in their laps, pots aboil on the stove, raging on about feminism and the patriarchy. I’m not kidding.) My husband has enjoyed the “heavy weapons” fighting; it’s good exercise, and just as with the women, there are plenty of fairly conservative men in the SCA. For many years politics was simply not mentioned, although one was expected to be a good sport and be “tolerant.” Also, when my husband and I first joined we weren’t Catholic or even practicing Christians. We live in a small city with a smaller group so we’ve probably missed some of the worst but we’ve heard about it.

How do you get Freemasons out of it?

I am not sure whether to take that as an insult or a compliment!

Arrogant Rifleman is unlikely to be upstaged by me or anyone, ever!

My only experience with SCA was in Toledo, where I met some folks who made homemade mead.

They gave me a few bottles, which contained the delicious drink!

I've been looking for a commercial brand of mead that was as good as their homemade stuff. The closest I've come so far is Camelot Mead.

But I live in Pennsylvania, with its archaic (NPI) beverage laws. The only way I could get some Camelot mead was to order several cases of the stuff from my State Liquor Store. That would have cost me about $200.

I didn't like it all that much!

I know it as Single Channel Analyzer as opposed to an MCA, a Multi Channel Analyzer. (For those into physics.)

So what is SCA, what do the letters stand for? Sheesh!

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

Ah, you bring back good memories of a very expensive, brand-new instrument I got to use back in the mid-70's. I can't even remember the manufacturer, EG&G, Varian? Definitely an American company, probably no longer exists. I was so amazed by the way the data built up in its digital memory back then.

Years ago I was in An Tir for the heavy fighting. Great sport. There was a lot of flirting and interesting customs like passing around an orange with cloves in it to memebers of opposite sex and sharing a kiss. There were some people I think likely were “swinging” there, but not most.

I looked it up. Ann dove into Catholicism and I walked away from following her rants after that.

“I have no clue what SCA is”

I thought it was the Society of Climate Alarmists!

I have no clue what SCA is

It started with the Pokemon crowd but quickly spread
to other forms of Japanese animation and now has gone viral.

It means "See Cartoon Anus" and it's very nasty.

The sword fighting isn't all that safe (or at least it wasn't thirty five years ago) as the swords were rattan wrapped in tape. You could get some serious bruises and armor was required to ensure that there were no broken bones (outside of the occasional hand).

The casual sex after hours was as near as I could tell a California thing, but at the dawn of the eighties sex was added to just about every activity in California where people participated in anything lasting more than one day.

One didn't see any of the after hours orgies at events in the Carolinas or the Gulf coast.

By the time I was 25 it took too long for bruises to heal, and even though I was faster and got hit less often I left.

There was no disappointment.

I was there for tutoring and practice in historically accurate medieval weapons techniques. Hollywood focuses too much on lighter swords and always chooses entertaining visuals over historical accuracy. You hardly ever see a halberd or a bardiche.
