In years past, I've posted many stories on FR about my father's experiences after Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, and I've posted about five (5) different threads on this situation. He lives in Old San Juan and always stated that the federal help was always there from prior to Hurricane Maria hitting - either via FEMA or the Military.
You can look back at these posts by using KEYWORD: Hurricane Maria; Puerto Rico; Vanity.
Not being a Trump fan, but tolerant of the President, my father has finally admitted something that I've been waiting for him to say for years. In a surprising turn of events, as we were discussing the misuse of funds and corruption, he said tonight that "Trump was right all along!" He also said that Trump is right in stopping all FEMA aid until things get settled on the island.
He uttered this as we were discussing the latest events in Puerto Rico -- the corruption, the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rosselló, the misuse of federal funds after Hurricane Maria and kickbacks.
It was good to hear this!
Congrats for both of you!
Wish your father the best from an anonymous FReeper :)
Better late than never to admit it.
I will never understand why Hispanics tolerate corruption in their societies and even worse, curse at those trying to point it out by accusing them of being ‘racists’.
FWIW...I’m ‘White-Hispanic’ (par for the course unbeknownst to liberals).
WMAL & Hurricane Maria Ping - UPDATE
WMAL & Hurricane Maria Ping - UPDATE
Sometimes people just have to come around in their own way and in their own time. I know this from personal experience.
(Washington, DC is a small area under federal jurisdiction, with some home rule, so federal socialists and other self-appointed betters, like Andy Harris, can do likewise there.)
There’s a few people I transport who should be clinically diagnosed with Trump Derangement Syndrome. Most have come around, especially those who are legal immigrants who are ticked off at the government letting criminals roam their neighborhoods and prey on their children.
I read awhile back that in the 50’s the US decided to change the economics of Puerto Rico from agricultural based to manufacturing based.
They gave corporations a major tax break, pharmaceuticals moved in, their economy soared.
Clinton pulled the plug on that one. Their economy tanked.
By the time the hurricane hit their infrastructure was already crumbling and didn’t have a chance.
Combine that with incompetent local governance, Puerto Ricans has paid a high price for inept politicos.
I fell in love with that island and her people 30 years ago.
Hate to see what it’s become.
Perhaps he can now convince others there. 8>)
Good to hear!
Trump is just proving himself - again and again.
More people see it every day.
Great Point!
Unfortunately a chuck of our pharmaceuticals (Vitamin C is a biggey.) and food source comes from China.
What a joy to read. Thanks for posting.
I loved Old San Juan when I went there decades ago. Was on a travel-writing trip and one of my fellow writers and I decided we wanted to live there, actually went apartment hunting. I always send best wishes to Puerto Ricans.
Thanks for the update Silvie! Hope you are doing well.
Puerto Rico is nice and if it had the tax breaks, I think it could be a star in the Caribbean. Beautiful island...nice people. I used to to PR in the 90s.
Funny you mention that. I’ve noticed that trend as well.
I guess if you are considered a spoiled step-child after a century or so of “territorial rule” and you get all sorts of goodies thrown your way, that mentality just gets ingrained.
With Cubans, the contrast is stark. Like they came from another totally different gene pool.
