Is this a sign of what is coming for the rest of the nation? In Martin County, Kentucky times are very tough right now. Thanks to severe budget cutbacks, there are only two paid law enforcement officers covering a deeply impoverished 231-square-mile area that sits right in the heart of Americas raging opioid crisis. Needless to say, Martin County Sheriff John Kirk feels greatly outnumbered by the thieves, sexual predators and drug dealers that he has to contend with on a daily basis, and he recently issued a very ominous warning to the citizens of his county
Before making a wave of cutbacks across his department, Martin County Sheriff John Kirk delivered a grim warning to residents of this hardscrabble Appalachian community.
Law enforcement as we have known for the last four years will not exist, he posted on Facebook last month. WE ARE BROKE
LOCK YOUR DOORS, LOAD YOUR GUNS AND GET YOU A BARKING, BITING DOG. If the Sheriffs office cant protect you, WHO WILL?

There are no doors in Appalachia.
Police merely supply the chalk and yellow tape at a crime scene.
I dont think that existed with the exception of in wilderness areas.
..............................................
Pardon me? You don’t think what?
Agreed.
Let’s be honest. If not for minority neighborhoods, the need for police would be slashed by 90 percent.
And there is Nothing I need on that part of the Island so I don’t care if it’s policed or not.
For me, in AA county, it is like living close to Mogadishu...
Same for my area of northern Ohio.Break into a house here and get shot to pieces for your trouble.
It’s kinda true man.
Yeah, like I said in another post, in minority neighborhoods they sometimes get into shootouts with the bad guys and win.
But I don’t live in those minority neighborhoods. Don’t even travel through them.
Let them pay for the protection.
The THREAT of someone calling the police I GUESS stops some from punching someone at a bar or assaulting their neighbor.
But an armed person would stop that behavior as well.
It’s called the Washington Monument argument.
A friend who owned a surf shop had that very security system. At night, he locked the doors and put the little dog bed up on the counter for his alarm Chihuahua... and two large dog beds on the ground for the matching pair of 90lb. Dobermans. Never had any problems.
I was gonna say the same thing. They dont protect. They show up after the fact to write a report. Here, unless theres bodily injury to someone, they dont show up at all. They tell you to fill a report out online.....for the insurance company.
Coming soon to a county near you.
(sigh)
Friends bought some land in Tennessee. This sort of thing is one of the reasons I’m thinking it may be better to just stay here in Texas suburbia.
Because it seems like if the world goes Mad Max, the first place the good ol’ boys are going to look when they start getting hungry is them fancy city slicker cabins.
What?!!!??
wow.
If I have any problems here,I’ll just borrow the neighbor’s backhoe.
They need to treat criminals in such areas like the vermin they are. Shoot’em and string them up on a fence like you would do a coyote.
You realize there was NO POLICE FORCE in the US for about 45 years after we became independent? Law enforcement was in the hands of the local sheriff and militias.
I dont live in this county but I do live in mountains with one neighbor my wifes mom and you are on your own for the most part anyway. Response time can vary from 10 minutes to 45 minutes. After dark if I dont know you I answer door with a pistol in my hand behind my back or in my belt. If a strange car pulls up and doesnt just turn around at my place or moms my oldest son and I investigate, fully armed. Shes a widow woman and will blow you away if you try and break in on her, damned good shot.
We live by the local national park and during the shutdown they started leaving places in park open all the time drawing in lots of neerdowells and some have missed their park rendezvous and pulled up at our place. The latest was a woman in a beat up car at 8:00pm in winter. My wife and I confronted her in her moms driveway and when asked who are you and what are you doing up here? We get stutters and stammering oh shes looking for picnic area? At 8:00pm in the middle of winter and it 15 degrees ? I told her we keep eye on everything up here and if we dont know you we will be asking why you are here. She apologized profusely and got out of there. Ignored the no trespassing sign at property entrance. Clearly not national park. Stay armed and aware of your surroundings.
Friends call them Red Neck burglar alarms - great for cars too!
Police, aka Uniformed Crime Scene Investigators.
I have several that I’m sure would protect me in the event that an unwelcomed visitor got into my house. Of course that same unwelcomed visitor would have to get past my 200+ pound Cane Corso and 180+ pound African Boerbel as they approached the house.
Good luck with amigo!
“This way people feel the pain as opposed to trimming the boards and city council positions.”
How are people “feeling pain” when the sheriff tells his constituents to lock and load and protect themselves?
Sounds like open season against criminals.
