When will we stop lowering our flag?
I drove into work this morning, and AGAIN the flags are lowered. I see DJT has ordered it again, this time for the victims of the bar shooting. (No, it is NOT for Armistice/Veteran's Day, which means again BTW it will be down at least on Sunday.)
Not a week goes by our US flag is not prostrate anymore.
WADR, I appreciate the grief over yet another mass murder, but this is NOT what lowering the flag is for.
I am sick of seeing them lowered; it symbolizes we are constantly in mourning - constantly WEAK and VULNERABLE. Constantly bending to some force, however small.
This all started with 9/11. Before that, we went by the Code. Flag-lowering was for HIGHLY IMPORTANT officials at a national level, on their death (NOT John McCain).
I can certainly understand "bending" the rules for a MASSIVE atrocity like 9/11, but that does not mean every mass murder should get a lowered flag (sorry, even 50 does not compare to 3000 - and that was a foreign attack). Why not every thug killing in Baltimore and Chicago? Why not every time a serial killer strikes? Maybe for those actual accidents, like the NY limo accident?
My God, we are CONSTANTLY showing weakness. It is disrespectful to the flag, to the nation. Because it shows how cowed we are.

I thought it was still lowered for the War Hero and universally adored Senator McCain?
That McCain, oh, we should also have a national day of remembrance for him to replace Christmas, the evil religious holiday based on racism.../s

We have become a weepy, womanly society Aint it the truth...
If todays standards were applied during WWII the flag would have been at half mast every day for 4+ years. At least then it would have had some range of legitimacy around combat deaths.

I agree 100%. This is become a political ritual, virtual signaling, rather than a respect of our traditions.

On the other hand, if we are going to lower the flag for deaths, why dont we leave it at half mast until there are no more abortions of American babies.

Considering the same amount of People die every week in Baltimore and Chicago as did in the Bar in T.O., we might as well make a Law that Flag Posts can only be five feet high.

You’re right about Chicago.
It would be lowered every Monday following the weekend tally.

When the flag is lowered every week, lowering loses its value.
Reserve it for the death of a national figure.

I always thought it was for government officials and especially military heros, but looking at the site, it appears the President and governor can order half staff for ordinary citizens,
I think the flag ettiquette should be changed to limit half staff to military only.
There IS a provision for fixed flags that can't be lowered to fly a black penant at the top and I would suggest if you want to honor other people ... fly a black penant at half staff with Old Glory STILL standing above all others.
Which brings up another of my pet peeves .... I've noticed HS bands dipping The Colors at the review srtand .... OUR AMERICAN FLAG NEVER BOWS TO ANYONE OR ANYTHING.

This really bothers me. I don't like the message it sends.

No, it is NOT for Armistice/Veteran's Day, which means again BTW it will be down at least on Sunday. Veteran's Day, formerly Armistice Day, is NOT a half staff day in the US. Those who gave all in defense of this nation are honored on Memorial, formerly Decoration, Day when the flag is at half staff from suririse to noon.

Senate and House members are not SUPPOSED to be this revered.
They’re supposed to pass some bills and then go home to their crops.
At least that’s the way it started.

The flag is at half mast so often they are going to have to fly it at a quarter mast when they are really sad.
To: the OlLine Rebel
It is really annoying. The flag is always at half staff these days. It seems every time someone’s beloved dog dies the flag comes down. It has gotten so that the flag at half staff no longer has any meaning

It cheapens the honor. Like when the Mountain Home AFB base commander agreed for a base wide memorial service for one of the guard dogs that died. Come on.
