A little over a week ago, someone attempted to blackmail me. On August 12, I received this message in an e-mail:
“...I infected your system with a trojan and now have all of your private data out of your operating system.
“It previously was set up on an adult page then you have selected the video and clicked on it, my program instantly got into your os.
“And then, your cam documented you soloing, also i caught a footage that you've seen.
“Just after a little while this also pulled out your device contacts. If you ever wish me to clear off your everything i have got - transfer me 450 dollars in bitcoin it is a cryptocurrency.
“At this moment you will have 24 hours. to make a decision The minute i will receive the deal i'll get rid of this footage and every little thing entirely. Otherwise, you should remember that your video is going to be submitted to all your contacts.”
Though it wasn’t the case in my instance, to heighten the level of threat, sometimes these e-mail scams even contain passwords used by the recipient. This is a new type of scam dreamed up by criminals seeking to prey on those who, because of their immoral behavior, have made themselves vulnerable to such a scheme.
Having never before received such a message, I was taken aback. However, because I knew that I had not done what the accuser had claimed—and because of the bad grammar and other clues—I was never frightened that the threat was real. I suppose a clear conscience is worth at least $450.

I have nothing to do with porn, yet I received one of these emails. My ISP placed it in a “bulk” folder, which blocked it from going to my Outlook. I recognized the password used, though. It was from a continuing education website for professional engineers. So these scammers are hacking into other websites to harvest email addresses and passwords. This is then fed into a program to generate the emails. I supposedly owe $7000 in Bitcoin.
BTW, my computer does not have a camera.

I think it’s Mark Zuckerberg who’s been seen carrying a laptop with a piece of electrical tape over the camera. One of the social media big wigs, in any case.
Ignore it.
For super extra security, backup your info on a memory stick, then format the hard drive and install a fresh copy of operating system (windows-10 etc). All viruses if any are now dead as a door knob.
Added bonus..your puter will run faster!

Years ago, folks thought I was paranoid when I put a post-it note over the camera in my office computer. By the time I left that job, half the office was doing that.

So sad to hear that about your friend. Porn is a terrible plague and a destroyer of lives and families. Mr. Thomas put some resources at the end of the piece I posted to help those with porn addiction. Maybe have him check those out? I will pray for him.

Unless the virus installs itself on your memory stick. Then every PC you plug it into gets infected as well.
Interesting. Yes, the passwords are being discovered by hacking institutions/businesses that have our info.

CIA, NSA others have backdoors to hack into anybodys webcam, cellphone Mic etc...
My guess is that, as with most of this kind of stuff, they are just shooting it out to a lot of people, hoping some were watching pr0n and aer paranoid that it is an authentic email.
There are gullible people of all ages. Old people fall for one kind of scam, men that are viewing this stuff fall for a different scam.
Where I work, everyone has tape over the camera on their laptop.
I don’t open emails from people I don’t know
I wonder if I got that one and don’t even know it. :)
