Anyone know what it feels like to be told you will be shot one by one?

They want me to call the detectives in the morning to see if they have cleared to take my car. Then I have to call some other place they have me numbers for. It definitely won’t be too early.

A lot of Veterans can tell you stories of being wounded, close calls and the scariest 60 seconds of their lives. But Vets are stoic and don’t talk about it. I could tell you several such stories but, once again, those who never did anything heroic in the military, and those who did, don’t talk about it (even if they were awarded a medal for valor). But civilians don’t expect to be placed in such situations. You will lose appetite for food, suffer insomnia and may suffer somatic symptoms from the release of emotions. This is what is often called Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Praying for others than yourself and consoling others often helps. We live in little security bubbles that can be punctured at a moments notice. It is akin to religious experience of what is called the stark terror of the Mysterium Tremendum, of the Power of God (only in this case it is the power of Evil). Go to the Police Station and bring some pie or cake and thank them for their heroism to act fast to stop any greater loss of life. You don’t have to be institutionally religious but go to a church of synagogue and realize there is something else beyond the everyday taken for granted existence.

Dear God, Bunny. I just read your post to me on the thread we had while it was happening. What an ordeal.

The next little bit may seem like a roller coaster, but you’re made of strong stuff girl, and even though we’re not there with you your freeper pals are praying for you and sending hugs.

Your idea of getting checked at the hospital is smart and I hope you follow up with it.

Remember. ..b r e a t h e ...

Bunny, do you think it would help you to tell us your story? Sort of an adrenaline dump via your fingers? Or are you more comfortable with a few sentences at a time? I’m so sorry you had to go through that!

So glad you are safe

I do not know how it is to be told since it happened in Brazil. An irate held a long barrel DA 357/38 to my head and started yelling at me. He may have said he was going to shoot me but my Portuguese really sucked but his intentions were obvious.

I have been in fire fights but when you have cold steel against your head, it is way different.

I am curious.

If you had a CCW handgun on your person, would there ever have been an opportunity where you could have gotten your gun, aimed, and shot the perp without extreme danger to yourself such as while he was holding his gun on you?

I am just curious about the circumstances. Would a carry pistol have been of use during your time as a hostage, or would it have made no difference and you would have had no opportunity to deploy it?

We always assume we would have some opportunity to shoot a perp with a carry pistol. Since you have been through a real world experience where you were held at gunpoint, I am just curious to know if you truly would have had some opportunity to shoot him with a carry pistol where you had some expectation of not getting shot in return, or if he was always watching you so closely that there would never have been an opportunity to sneak out your carry gun, aim, and have been able to shoot him and possibly end the standoff.

Thank in advance.

As a result of this event, are you giving any thought to leaving California or at least moving away from Los Angeles.

I’m just wondering how this is affecting you. I would have a hard time wanting to live where I went through something like this. Obviously this could happen anywhere from a major city to a small town. But where crime is rampant, your odds are much higher. More criminals means more opportunity to be caught in the violence.

Has this incident caused you to rethink living in Los Angeles/California?

Fox news just reported at the top of the hour that you and the others were held hostage for THREE hours. That is a looong time. I am so glad you're fine. I moved out of the San Fernando Valley (Northern LA county, the Northridge-Chatsworth area) after living and working there for many years, in 2015. I saw an increasing amount of criminal and weird/violent conduct that made it stressful and just plain unpleasant to continue living there, despite the amazing weather. Saw a lot of gang related stuff happening in the Valley, a lot of gun fire late at night, LAPD choppers with their search lights on - circling around and around my neighborhood at least twice a week usually at night but during the day sometimes too, once a cop car slammed into the big tree in my front yard while chasing a suspect, etc.

I now live in New England where I grew up, and enjoy it so much. Here in New Hampshire, if you hear gunfire it is ALWAYS friends and neighbors peacefully practicing at the town's outdoor range - it's not illegal criminal gangs over in Winnetka like it used to be. I moved from a heavily Dem CA district to a heavily Rep (GOP) NH town, the difference is night & day. Folks actually leave their doors open if they go to town for groceries, everyone helps out and are respectful of private property, etc. Love it here.
