WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK, NY A collective scream Wednesday marked a year since Donald Trump was elected leader of the U.S.
Hundreds of New Yorkers gathered for the anniversary, crowding into Washington Square Park Wednesday night and howling at the top of their lungs.
The cathartic group wail was the only release that would satisfy some New Yorkers after the year that's passed since Trump defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. New Yorkers overwhelmingly supported Clinton during the 2016 presidential elections with all boroughs except Staten Island casting most of their votes for her 79 percent of ballots.
The crowds started to gather in the park shortly before 7 p.m.
"Yell about everything that's enraged you not just since Trump's election, but the months leading up to it; everything that we've seethed about, but had no control over," the event's organizer, Nathan Wahl, wrote on a Facebook page inviting people to the event.
"Yell about Trump and his sexual assault, his arrogance, his racism, his bigotry, his intolerance of anyone with a different nationality or skin color or gender than his own. Yell about his calls to silence reporters, to quell the first amendment, his compassion for white supremacists, his encouragement of police brutality and violence."
John Eng, a Manhattan resident, came out with a "Dump Trump" sign on Wednesday night.
"I'm here to protest everything our president stands for. I believe the whole year has been a nightmare," Eng said. Eng cited Trump's actions on immigration and his statements about white supremacists among the most frustrating periods of Trump's presidency.
Eng, 54, said he couldn't pick just one moment from the past year that had most made him want to scream.
"When you wake up one day, you believe it can't get any worse, you can't get any more angry," Eng said. "Then something happens the next day."
The anti-Trump protesters were met by an unexpected group of Trump supporters on Wednesday night. A group of at least a dozen people, many dressed in "Make America Great Again" gear from the Trump campaign, showed up to heckle the protestors. The protestors and anti-protestors frequently got into heated arguments before and after the central scream, with one fight nearly devolving to blows after an anti-protestor stole a sign from a Trump protestor.
Eva Sahana, an organizer with the group Refuse Fascism, said she wasn't in Washington Square Park to scream helplessly.
"We are screaming in rage, we are screaming in pain, but we are screaming in unity and solidarity cause we have a plan and a way forward," Sahana said.
Sahana said she was "a little surprised" by the Trump supporters who had turned out, but not deterred by them.
"It's extremely, extremely frustrating," she said. "Luckily, those are not the people we're trying to speak to. We're speaking to the tens of millions of people who we know hate the Trump and Pence regime and these people have already crossed the line."

Superstitious tribals shouting and beating drums to frighten away the demon eating the sun during an eclipse, that’s what came to mind.

Let it all out....
A chick back in the 70’s told me she was a screamer, but I think it means something different now.
There was a really good Andy Griffith Show on today. Opie met a kid who got his way by crying, wailing and throwing a tantrum. Opie gave it a try on ol Ange, and it didnt go over too well. Later, when Opie witnessed the kid acting out in front of both the sheriff and the kids own dad, Opie realized just how pathetic it wasand so did the kids dad. At Andys prompting, he finally, literally took the punk out to the woodshed.
Quick somebody build that wall from the movie Escape from New York
Maybe we can contain the contagion.
Best election evah!
The gift that keeps on giving. ;-)

YAWN!!!!
Congratulations, President Trump, for an amazing year! Now you just have to keep it up, at least until 2020! MAGA!!!!
Would it have been rude to go there and give a heart felt “WooHoo!” or even a Nelson Muntz “HaHa!” during their primal scream therapy?
the problem is that not enough parents take their kids to the woodshed for discipline anymore- their idea of discipline is to take TV away fro an hour
Dress rehearsal for January 20th? LOL
Infantile. Where’s that democrat logo with the crying baby? Democrats are stuck at the toddler stage.
While I scream at the sky: “THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU,” as my IRA goes UP and UP and UP.
Infantile behavior.
