All the Raisinets in the world aren’t enough to sugarcoat this fact: In recent months, the Hollywood box office has been a disaster. In terms of attendance, Tinseltown just wrapped up its worst summer at the box office in nearly a quarter-century.
That means theaters now have to fight harder than ever to get butts in seats. “For a very long time, movie theaters were not overly focused on pleasing the consumer,” says Eric Handler, a media analyst at MKM Partners.
But in recent years, he says, theater owners have wised up to a novel idea: making the theater experience enjoyable beyond the screen.
First it was comfier seats, and now it’s all about tossing aside the stale popcorn for mouthwatering gourmet options. “Movie theaters are really stepping up to distinguish themselves from each other,” says Daniel Loria, editorial director of BoxOffice Media. “Every theater is building its identity.”
New boutique-style venues are offering everything from dine-in table service to full bars. That competition’s a good thing, says Loria, and it hints at a sustainable future. “So many theaters wouldn’t be opening if there were heavy clouds in the forecast,” he says....

I do think there is a niche for small theaters right now to show old classics and art (foreign) films, if they can create a pleasant enough atmosphere to bring in adult regulars.
Cruises have been seducing me since 1989 with gourmet food & live entertainment and ocean breezes. My alcohol intake boils down to 2 o3 drinks during a 7 day cruise.

I admit, I have gone to one of these high-end theaters...I knew it would be expensive but....I took three other people with me...the seats were really big, leather recliners - very comfortable. The seats were paired by 2’s and between them was a small table with a lamp on it. It was very comfortable...the room seated about 25 people which was really nice as the seats were not all slammed together...we had some food and drinks delivered to our seats during the movie that we ordered off a menu. Waiters came around 3 or 4 times during the movie to see if we needed anything. The quality of the food was fair to poor. All in it costed about $200. Nice experience buy way too expensive.
If you have not seen the movie before, it is brand new to you, regardless of release year.
I knew the movie experience was going downhill the time I was watching a movie and heard an infant crying.

We went to see a movie recently. Two tickets, popcorn, two drinks, and a candy: $54! The negative experience of ads, noise, and other things is why we have a nice system at home to enjoy instead.

Hollyweird doesn’t produce movies worth sitting through anymore anymore and why would I want to support an industry that hates me and says so every chance they get .

Exactly. And not exactly as good as the first one. But worth the $6 for the two of us. Not a good value at $30 for two tickets.

Actually they’re doing very well. They tend to be smaller theaters so they don’t need as high a ticket sales. And since in the opening weeks the distributor takes most of the ticket money loss of seats isn’t much loss of revenue. Theaters have always made the bulk of their money on refreshments, these theaters have simply decided that instead $1 candies and selling them for $5 to actually make their refreshments good and worth the money.
In the end they really don’t even make things more expensive, the one by me prices run about the same as any other mid-range bar/restaurant. And they make the wise move of having the lobby open to the non-ticketed as an actual restaurant, so you don’t even need to go to a movie for them to make money on you (the wife is quite fond of a couple things on their menu, we’ve gone for lunch without a movie multiple times). You can spend $20 per person for crappy refreshments at a regular theater or $20 per person for good food and drink at the upscale place.
They’re actually growing the industry (their subsection of it anyway) very well. They’re attacking some of the major complaints people have with the theater experience, and positioning themselves to be profitable if current trends continue.
I love the movie parties at Dallas area Alamo Drafthouses. Special foods and drinks, quote-alongs to Willie Wonka with two of the original kids in person, Blazing Saddles, Rocky Horror with the original cast, Galaxy Quest and a tribute to Alan Rickman, Love Actually to cheer or boo along, and two different Die Hard parties, including one on Christmas Eve. Props to join in on the screen action. Massive bowls of popcorn for the price of a tiny box at other theaters. Worth the cost!
