Cinemas are seducing movie-lovers with gourmet food and booze

All the Raisinets in the world aren’t enough to sugarcoat this fact: In recent months, the Hollywood box office has been a disaster. In terms of attendance, Tinseltown just wrapped up its worst summer at the box office in nearly a quarter-century.

That means theaters now have to fight harder than ever to get butts in seats. “For a very long time, movie theaters were not overly focused on pleasing the consumer,” says Eric Handler, a media analyst at MKM Partners.

But in recent years, he says, theater owners have wised up to a novel idea: making the theater experience enjoyable beyond the screen.

First it was comfier seats, and now it’s all about tossing aside the stale popcorn for mouthwatering gourmet options. “Movie theaters are really stepping up to distinguish themselves from each other,” says Daniel Loria, editorial director of BoxOffice Media. “Every theater is building its identity.”

New boutique-style venues are offering everything from dine-in table service to full bars. That competition’s a good thing, says Loria, and it hints at a sustainable future. “So many theaters wouldn’t be opening if there were heavy clouds in the forecast,” he says....

What difference do booze and reclining seats make if I have absolutely no desire to see the latest piece of cr@p Hollyweird has produced?!

But $18.50 is not bad for a gourmet meal (If it really is!). Maybe you can get up and leave after the movie starts.

...and 99% of the movies suck.

Not much the theater owners can do about that.

Is this a problem? Watch a movie, eat, drink.

I don’t think food and drink are included in that price, that’s merely admission to the theatre.

Sooooooo, over priced bar food to watch celebrities take a crap? I see a flaw in this plan. Call me a nay sayer if you want, but this is ending in chapter 7.

it’s a stupid way of trying to increase revenue in face of steeply declining attendance

making something more expensive does not grow your industry

I’ve been to several of those over the years, this is not a new idea. One in Biloxi only charged one dollar in admission, I guess they made their money on the food and liquor.

I think that is only the ticket price. Food and drink will cost a lot more, as usual.

Eat fine food —huuugely overpriced- at a SEWER DEALERSHIP..?

Meh, no thanks.

Better would be cheap overpriced food at a sewer dealership.

Or just DO NOT GO to that sewer dealership:

Which I already do not.

I remember going to a multiplex in the 80s and seeing several movies to choose from listed. Now I drive by and see nothing worth paying for. And I love movies. I think the last really impressive movie I saw was “Gone Girl”. I saw “Rogue1” and it was okay. Much better than “The Force Awakens”. The new comedies are awful. The last good one was “Worlds End” and thats British.

I have amazon prime and with $5 a month I get a load of Brit mysteries from Acorn, any one of which is more engaging than these overblown comic book movies.

I would go out to movies if they would make some good ones. But Hollywoods law that all movies push pervert values I’m going to keep passing.

"What difference do booze and reclining seats make if I have absolutely no desire to see the latest piece of cr@p Hollyweird has produced?!"

Add to that the freakin' slovenly people yacking on cell phones, talking and commenting on the movie and dragging their unruly kids with them and we have no desire to set foot in one of those germ infested incubators in the first place.

We haven't been to a theater movie since 2004.

Post 6 photo:

“I know what..!! We’ll bring them in by making the theaters MORE LIKE HOME..!”

So there it is, what THEY KNOW is the future:

Home viewing of movies.

Or more precisely:

Home viewing of NON-movies, or at least movies made by individuals or much smaller companies, featuring values that the VIEWERS SHARE.

Hollywood hates us, diverse theater patrons speak through the movie in ordinary conversational volume, and the movie start times are LIES: 22 minutes of your time is hijacked for marketing EVERY time.

Just stay home, away from the America Haters.

Well, there is one shining light right now. And it is causing such an epidemic of Coulrophobia, that I wouldn’t be surprised if several wits and pranksters are taken up for the innocent act of tying a red helium balloon to a sewer grate.

$3 at the Elvis Cinema and we don’t buy the goodies.

The movies are past new release but we save a few bucks that way. Still new, though.

Saw Guardians of the Galaxy II last weekend.
