Its true that the first day of your period is usually the absolute worst. Its different for everyone, but cramps, fatigue, and irritability are pretty common, and for some women, they can be crippling. Thats what the women of Culture Machine say, at least, in a new video announcing the companys plan to give women the first day of their period off. Culture Machine is a digital media company in Mumbai, which makes this all the more progressive. In rural parts of India, women are often sent out to menstruation huts to wait our their period. The huts are very bare bones no mattresses, obviously no air conditioning, and no running water. Recently, a woman in Nepal died in a menstruation hut.
So for a company in Mumbai to even be talking about periods is a pretty big deal. Devleena S. Majmuder, the President of Human Resources said in a statement, The first day is obviously a not so comfortable day for most. Its time we face the reality. This is not an embarrassment. This is part of life. Ruchir Jochi, the Head of Content, thinks that if men got their periods, they would all be taking off, too. The realization that we have to have is that we dont understand the pain and we dont go through it. If we were to have probably that kind of discomfort, we would possibly not be coming to office or not be doing work at that point of time, he said.
Culture Machine also started a Change.org petition for companies across the subcontinent to offer First Day of Period (FOP) leave. Another Mumbai company has also followed their lead. Japan and Taiwan already offer this type of leave; Italy is currently debating paid period leave for women, too. It would be the first Western country to offer days off for menstruating.
Its kind of a complicated issue. While its important for period to be something women shouldnt be scared of talking about or feel ashamed of, giving women days off to menstruate can also reinforce the idea that women arent capable of doing the equal amount of work that men can do simply because they menstruate. Companies that want to increase productivity might think twice about hiring women if they know theyre taking a standard sick day every thirty days, much like companies used to (and likely still do) be wary of hiring a woman lest she go on maternity leave.
While taking a paid sick day isnt the same thing as a sending a woman into a hut without food or water, it could reinforce the stereotype that women are impure or cant participate in society because their uterus sheds its lining.
Instead of fighting for something that affects just women, better paid sick leave plans all around might be more useful for the feminist cause. That way, every one could get a couple more days to use if their cramps are making work impossible.
As for me, I only experience a painful cramp once and I was about 15. I was at school, I went to the restroom due to discomfort and leaned against the wall and boom I had this extremely painful cramp that I cried out & kicked the wall.
Later thru out it was regular & light, but when I reached my 30’s it became so heavy. I will admit I have taken 3 days off on occasion to take time off. No matter how many times I changed I have stained the seats at work. Again I did not take time off every month, it simply depends on the flow & discomfort.
Now I am currently going thru menopause. My periods are far in between, I can’t wait for my period to end completely where I can say my nightmare is finally over. LOL

Code Red ! Code Red !
WTF? And the feminists bitch about equality, wage gap, sexism, etc. etc. and they get behind this sh*t? I fear for the future. I really do.
“if I identify as a woman I can get 2 extra days of vacation a month?”
If it comes to where I work, I will try it. I’ll get “retired” with extreme prejudice, no doubt, but what the heck, I’m good to go.
You are correct, sir!
Every company I’ve ever worked for has provided at least 12 days off when you add up personal time, vacation, etc.
So my read on this isn’t that women want a day off for their period - it’s that they want 12 additional days off for their period on top of the standard PTO.
Uhm...Looking forward to hot flashes are you?
I'd choose crampy periods over hot flashes. You can make plans around periods but not the HF. It'll be -30 outside and you'll want to strip naked. They disturb your sleep. One minute you're sleeping soundly, the next minute you're throwing the covers off the bed and you want to shave your hair off.
Cherish your remaining periods :)
I have poly cystic ovary disease and endometriosis.
There were days I could barely function from the pain.
If you have never experienced it, you really need to take a great big dose of shut the hell up, because you REALLY don’t understand the absolute misery those conditions can cause.
I’ve worked since I was 16, and I did miss work days due to first days. And a few second and third days.
I also have 4 children I gave birth to / adopted over the years.
My company was not injured in the least because I made sure my work was caught up.
Some of you....you really need to get a gripe. If you’re male or a female that didn’t struggle with this, consider yourself blessed. You have NO idea. None.

Sound like a bloody good perk.
Geez, I think my laptop must have PMS...I have no idea why it posted multiple times.
Sorry.
Also, should it not be for at least 5 days?
Lighten up :)
Your condition is way past the basic cramps. I’m sorry for what you had to go through. It’s debilitating.
In your case there’s no reason why a doctor couldn’t prescribe a day off every month. You would have a legit reason to. Others just need to man-up and take a midol.
I was MGTOW before mgtow was a thing.
Me and my doggo(s) have many miles behind us, happy miles.
Zero complaints...

And this relates to companies offering a personal day for menstration how?
Well that was different!! :)

As far as I personally am concerned, menopause is a girl’s best friend. :)
For some of us, it’s not actual period days that poses problems. For some of us, it’s the days leading up to that day that’s rough..IE PMS.
I’m glad to see women being offered a break for their difficult day. There are genuine physical issues that can accompany our cycles that are uniquely individual, bit can be dangerous for some such as clumsiness. Depending on the job, a girl can get hurt! If you have a pounding headache bordering on migraine, it can affect job performance and even safety. Pills don’t help some of these issues.
If a man has a bad case of diarrhea, what does he do? I’m sure much depends on his job and his ability to use the men’s room as often as needed. The same thing happens to some women on that special day, accompanied by severe pain and migraine that no amount of pamprin or midol is going too relieve.
Some lucky women have zero issues with their monthly, others are darned near totally incapacitated along with everything in between.
Sometimes medical remedies exist or alleviate issues, but those remedies don’t exist for everybody.
It’s sad that a woman’s respect is denied her due to physiology that she didn’t ask for. That’s an attitude that seriously needs to be changed. Pretending a woman is a man isn’t the right way to go about it. Respecting a woman when she set’s a limit without spelling it out or throwing sarcastic remarks is what needs to happen. Men do this and nobody questions it. I’ve heard men say “ I have more on my plate than I can handle, your request is going to have to wait.”. Or..I’m too busy right now to do that, it’ll have to wait.”. When a woman say such, she’s ostracised.
