The New York Times reported Monday that a sanctuary bill in a liberal Maryland county faced "surprise" opposition from the county's legal immigrant communities.
"Sanctuary Bills in Maryland Faced a Surprise Foe: Legal Immigrants," the Monday headline read. The Times‘ Sabrina Tavernise reported on a sanctuary bill that was shot down in Howard County, where one in five residents were born outside the country and Democrats outnumber Republicans two to one.
The legislation would have made Howard County a sanctuary for illegal immigrants, requiring the jurisdiction to not fully cooperate with federal immigration officials.
It turns out the county's legal immigrants were not too keen on having an influx of illegal immigrants, arguing that "offering sanctuary to people who came to the country illegally devalued their own past struggles to gain citizenship." The Times spoke to four legal residents who explained why they were opposed to the measure.
"Stanley Salazar, a native of El Salvador, worried that the violent crime already plaguing Maryland's suburbs attributed to immigrant gangs would eventually touch his own daughters," the Times reported.
Salazar himself was once an illegal immigrant when he overstayed his visa, but he opposes the sanctuary measure based on his previous experience when Maryland's Montgomery County saw a boom in illegal immigration.

I’ve always wondered if the editors of the NYT or other libs would mind if their daughter were dating an MS-13 member.
I’ve always been surprised that any legal immigrant would welcome illegals.
Legal immigrants who work hard are often faced with poor housing choices, poor schools to send their kids to, fewer jobs available, fewer opportunities to advance, and dozens more disadvantages.
And yet they want illegals to come in and crowd them out even more???
I’m in no danger of having an illegal take my job and push me out of the housing market.
But if my name was Jose and if I was born here to US parents, I certainly would not want millions of illegals pushing me further down the poverty line.
Seems like it doesn’t it.
Why would it be a surprise that those who got in line, waited their turn and obeyed all the rules would object to others cutting in line, ignoring the rules and getting a pass?

So many things that have been tried before and failed, have been proven wrong, and yet they’re still at it.
Right now I’m sure the Left is holding special closed door meetings trying to figure out how to pay for tax cuts.
After going through all of the legal paperwork and time to move to the US, why would they want the cartels and gangs to move in next door? If the liberals are going to hide behind that argument, you’d hope their positions would be logical.
The people who hate illegals the most are American Hispanics. I’ve never heard a white person say ‘f*cking wetbacks’, but I’ve heard quite a few Hispanics say it.
Worse, there are millions of law abiding people in line now, waiting patiently for years, some rotting away in their sticking hellhole countries, now watching in dismay as millions of illegals cut to the front of the line.
