Greeting Everyone. It is time once again for some more thought provoking ideas & discussion.
I've been getting some FReep mail about some ideas for this thread. One of which covers, if you & your family do have to "bug-out" where do you go to & how are you guys going to get there. There are several lines of thought on this, depending on the disaster you are prepping for. Are you [like me] looking at a total grid down [via either natural or man made] or are you worried about Yellowstone super volcano going off, or is it an 8+ earthquake, or are you worried about an plague upon the land that has no cure [like liberalism......LOL] So a lot of the information that is being sent out is saying the Ozarks of Missouri & Arkansas, or maybe the Appalachians. Just remember there is NO longer a places where you are going to live & not see another living soul. Nor should you, humanity by our very nature are social creatures. But we can be wary of those who choose to enter our lives/areas of living. But then there is the question comes up how in the heck do I/we get there to our bug out location/place of safety. This is where prepping comes into play, the rule of 3's . You will have to have a primary plan & then at least 2 backup plans. [and remember EVERYTHING is subject to change on a moments notice too] So for us, I would plan to bug in [stay put] but this is due to our family needs [we are a family of special needs & not able to travel too much or very well] So if we did have to relocate, I would look to head closer to the Mississippi River. This would provide us with a water & food sources that are easy to access. The water can be purified for drinking & household uses. And the fish & other food sources would be easier to get. But no plan is perfect nor should it be. There will always be problems that crop up from time to time that may require some imagination to overcome. Ans what may work for you & your family may not work for someone else & theirs. But this is just my idea/s & thoughts. What of shelter/s do you go with the nuke bunker [concrete & steel], or do you go with what ever is at hand? What about uses of power, wind, solar, water, or just no power. These are questions that need to be answered before any thing happens that could end the lives of you & your family. Also what of information storage. [I use a wide variety of media, from a back up laptop, to "hard" copy print outs, to real honest to God books [both in paper back & hard copy] and this goes for our music as well] We need to entertain ourselves by other means other than having access to the internet. I have some crystal radio sets, music on several sets of back up [ie cd's,dvd's, cassette tapes, ect...] I have back up power supplies ready to go, for if & when they are needed. And to include 2 way radios, so we can keep in touch with each other for when I am out hunting & fishing, or looking for other resources. But these are just a few things on my mind for now, [and to "coin" a phrase] what say you on this.
And thank you for reading & responding to this in a thoughtful manner. All comments are welcome, but please remember that there maybe those who may be reading this that are not real friendly to us or our causes. So please use the OPSEC Rule. Speak of only generalities & nothing of your very specifics plans or preps or gear.
Pinging the Prepper List
Please add me to your ping list! Thanks.
Also - I have am looking for some general info - my daughter and son in law live in a very rural (yes - there are some areas still!) section of central New York State. It is also great hunting - deer, turkey, etc.
They have a a roughly 20 acre section of land that they want to sell off that would be perfect for preppers.
Does anyone have any info/advice as to where they might list the property where preppers looking for land would see it?
May I gently suggest, inserting an indentation or double return space for each paragraph would make reading much easier.
“So a lot of the information that is being sent out is saying the Ozarks of Missouri & Arkansas, or maybe the Appalachians.”
We decided on the Appalachians. And I’m so glad I did!
Although it is hard to find anything here in the east that is very rural - even far from city centers and in what you would think is in the middle of nowhere, there are houses. I guess that comes from being civilized for centuries, vs out west.
Careful now, river towns along the Mississippi tend to show up very blue on the electoral maps, for reasons that date back to the steamboat era. There are rural areas that are okay, but do your homework.
where is there property?....I’m originally from NYS and going there in July...and, how much...
It may still be an option to hit Sports Authority closing sales for gear.
Thank you for the post.
Every prepper needs to know how to be expedient. In our nuclear world, with power plants at risk, and the various weapons and devices out there, things could go sideways very quickly for a lot of reasons.
One of the very best references for how to survive a nuclear event with materials commonly available is the book by Cresson Kearny: “Nuclear War Survival Skills.” This MUST be in every prepper’s library.

While equipment to survive is minimal, it requires knowledge and skills. This book provides it. If you do not have a copy. Get one now. It is reasonably priced. I think someone told us on a previous thread some time ago that it can even be downloaded free. That may or may not still be the case.

Joel Skousen has a book written with information and ratings about our country’s states with respect to safety, and gives a lot of knowledge about how to choose a place to go if you are wishing to relocate. He has also written about house construction for your relocation in another book. Both books can be reviewed here:

Yessssssssssssssssssssss!
It is in Otsego County and it is about 20 acres. They are asking $99,000.00 or thereabouts.
It has a hunter type cabin on it that does have electricity and well, septic, etc.
Bugging means you had better have some place to go.
“Bugging out”? To WHERE??
When 'the balloon goes up", you have to make a decision to either stay where you are , or to go elsewhere.
It all depends on variables and your flexibility and ability to re-act in a timely manner.
If you have no where to go, fortify where you are (food, water, etc.)
If you decide to go elsewhere, you have a day to a day +1/2 to go and get there; after that, even the stupefied will have figured it out and accepted reality, and react.
If you are traveling, make sure you have enough fuel to get to where you are going; if you have only a half tank, make sure you can either make it, or enough to go back home.
I for one AVOID anything to do with people like alex jones or others who are pushing any sort of an agenda/s. I have met mr. jones & found him to be a hate filled little man with a very large “little man” syndrome. He finds issue with everything that does not have his name connected with it. I also have the same type of issue with mr. eib him self...rush..
There are a lot of very worth while books out there that are filled with very useful info without the political preaching. I have in my personal reference library, military operations manuals, books on blacksmithing, air gunning, fishing tips, hunting tips, gardening info, electrical building manuals, medical treatment books ect....[Due to all my head injuries, I have forgotten a lot of information, so I keep a large library at my fingertips, to fall back on when I need them.]
But this is just my personal position on such people.
Not in the rural part of the states outside of the urban centers. But your point is well taken though.
I have a couple of these, as well as FRS, & CB for back up comm. The idea is to be flexible in everything.
There’s a book I found called “The Knowledge” that looks very useful. It doesn’t have many blueprints, but it gives enough understanding of the basics of how things work, that it could take a small group of people from the stone age to the mid-1940s level of technology, within a single generation.
I found it fascinating enough to read for fun.
Be sure you’re on high ground. Close to the Mississippi says flood zone to me.
