There were mant accidents and stupid events, like a guy who had adrenaline rush and forgot that he needed to switch safety so he tried and tried to shoot, but nothing. At the end he beat the other man with rifle like he was holding a baseball bat and not a rifle, luckily the other guy was confused more than him so this worked.
People made lots of mistakes in that time. Knowledge about weapons and knowledge about fighting was very low, so that was another reason why folks loved that rifle. Easy to handle and easy to kill.
Real event from that time was that after one group broke in military storage they took cases with rifles, but nobody touched guided anti tank missiles. At that moment nobody had a clue how they worked. Too heavy to carry and rifles had real value. Another urban legend is that some folks tried to fire one of the rockets but they failed to understand how to operate the small joystick so they blew themselves and their buddies up.

I must have spent eight hours reading his stories. That man went though hell
and survived. I do not romanticize about any SHTF situation after reading up.

The AR for Mrs Child, the AK for me. At 63 with the eyesight that goes with it, I’m not going after 300 yard targets. I love the simplicity and reliability of the AK. It is more than accurate at 150 yds or less. True functionality.

If you can’t operate a safety, get a Glock.

I once read a story (in a book called “Death in the Tall Grass”) about a hunter who got so wound up when he saw a lion that he operated the bolt on his rifle 4 times without ever pulling the trigger once. Afterward when the his guide asked what happened the guy actually thought he was shooting and missing. The lesson above is less about knowing how to operate your weapon and more about not panicking.

Ah yes, Death in the Long Grass by Peter Hathaway Capstick, great read, right up there with Jim Corbett's Man-Eaters of Kumaon.

Selco called his AK “Gypsy Woman”...
I call mine “Homeland Security”.
Funny how that works, huh?

Many hundred - probably thousands! - of Civil War rifled muskets have been found abandoned after the battles with 4-5-6-7 musket balls rammed down the barrel. With wad and powder rammed down between each Minie ball!
How many tens of thousands of additional rifles were replaced or discarded during the war by men who misfired once, reloaded, misfired again, reloaded, misfired again, ....

There are stories of Civil War soldiers finishing battles with their rifled filled near to the end with multiple charges.
