The Ebola outbreak is not just a human tragedy. It’s also an economic one.

Harnessing the energy of the St. Paul River in Liberia, the Mount Coffee hydroelectric plant was supposed to bring power -- and prosperity -- to a country upended by nearly two decades of civil war.

That was before the outbreak of Ebola ravaged the developing nation, where less than 1 percent of the population has access to reliable public electricity. Construction on the plant has ground to a halt. The foreign staffers leading the project have left the country. Hopes of lighting up Liberia by 2016 could are dimming.

The Ebola epidemic has killed more than 2,300 people in Liberia, making it ground zero in the deadly disease’s march across West Africa. But the tragedy encompasses not only those who lost their lives and their families, but also the dreams of a country that was on the cusp on an economic resurgence. With critical public works projects in limbo and businesses struggling, the virus is threatening Liberia’s chance to escape generations of poverty and join Africa’s rising prosperity.

“Liberia was moving,” said Estrada Bernard, chairman of the International Bank in Liberia and the Liberian president’s brother-in-law. “The whole thing hinges upon how well we can get this virus under control.”

The best-case scenario compiled by the World Bank predicts Liberia’s economic growth will still plunge by more than half this year. Rubber, one of the nation’s biggest exports, is expected to fall 20 percent this year. Gold and diamond mining have also dropped off. Beer production plunged 30 percent during the first quarter...

So, is this touching on the REAL reason for the ‘keystone cops’ routine from the administration?

Could they possibly be so arrogant that they would have put poll numbers about the economy ahead of safety of the public?

Nah. On what could we possibly base that assertion?

I'm neither an economist or investment guy ...

but I do know that West Africa (and then the REST of Africa) is a critical supply source of ...

chocolate
rare metals
gold
diamonds.

What's the global economic impact if those comodity prices DOUBLE or TRIPLE ?

"That reason" ... my conservative friends ... is "why" Barack Hussein Obama is sending 4,000 U.S. Military "expendables" to fight (and die) against Ebola ....

to protect the financial interests of Goldman-Sachs, et al and their commodity futures investments.

Tell your friends that you "heard it here (Free Republic) first ..."

The Indonesian has a tenuous hold on the US blacks, he has to appear to be one of them. This way he can talk big and still kill the infidel at the same time.

I read somewhere on the ‘net, but can’t remember where - that there might be “black gold” in West Africa, and, if true, might play into the economic motive.

Maybe a more knowledgeable FReeper can do some researching into this? I don’t know enough to separate rumor from supposition from fact. Therefore, I could be dangerous, you know!

What kind of person would put their children on a plane? Even headed to Disney World? Who would sit in a movie for a few hours not knowing who sat there an hour before...

Would you sit in a restaurant knowing 30 groups had sat in the same booth in the last twenty four hours? Bye-bye fast food places... Bye bye entertainment venues... People are going to stay home and try to live. Businesses will go under - civic places will be deserted....

I guess it's worth it - letting Americans die and have our country destroyed.... better than telling some Africans they'll have to wait a few months to visit the United States. Or making some small attempt to protect our borders.
