I Can’t Stand Gene Roddenberry

Sorry to all you Star Trek fans out there. I may be the only science fiction fan in the universe that really hates his guts. He stands in the annals of history with Karl Marx as one of the most vile perpetrators of socialism and communism this planet has ever known. I call him the used philosophy salesman…. and he was good at that job, one of the best.

Today is the anniversary of his birth and I have been constantly reminded of this all morning. Tributes everywhere I look to the man who turned the brains of a generation of science fiction fans to utter mush. If only he had passed on ten years earlier. We would never have had to put up with the inane techno-babble ramblings and neo-communist preaching of the Next Generation.

Yeah, in that type of economy the last thing that would be invented would be the replicator.

The only thing of importance would be land. Like Picard's family vineyard. Or your beach front villa. Property remains in Star Trek. So communism isn't there.

There's a billion planets out there, so you may not get Picard's vineyard but there's billions others out there to choose from.

>>There was absolutely no ‘equality’ on the Enterprise.

I was just talking about the economy. The incredibly heirarchal society was another story, and don’t even get me started on the plight of the Red Shirts.

Those guys not only knew how to make ALL the technology work, they were also the most expendable. Now, in a society where the technology enables everyone to realize their wildest dreams, shouldn’t those tech guys be almost revered?

But, instead they are chosen to die horrible deaths. Its like the effete blue shirts and overbearing gold shirts were jealous and wanted the red shirts to die young. There is something going on behind the scenes with this that they don’t want us to know! :)

On a car, you dampen inertia with a shock absorber.

True enough. Another earthly example would be some of the methods used to make buildings earthquake resistant.

Geez! What a bunch of whiney losers. It was a friggin' tv show about a guy using his ship and crew to get him into situations where he could do some shoulder roles, shoot aliens, chew scenery, and bag a few green chicks. There's no deeper message to be had despite all pretensions.

Ultimately, the Enterprise was a place where the Shat shat like no other actor had shat before. And I say that with all affection for the Shat.

But didn’t the ship spend some of it’s time out of warp drive and within the normal laws of physics?

>>Still, that doesn’t solve all scarcity. Some people still own restaurants and mountain cabins and lavish beachfront homes.

But, in a society where all material needs are met by the matter replicator why would you want to own and work in a restaurant or own and maintain a primitive mountain cabin? The answer is that a minority of the population choose to do that and most of the people are content to live with the replicator products.

In the UFP society, you only see the cream of the crop in Starfleet. These are people who are willing to risk their lives when all the needs of everyone are already met. They are the really the individualists.

I’m sure that back on Earth, in the cities, are people who just exist and nothing more. Perhaps there are strict birth limits and energy allowances to keep them content, but controlled. We never get to see that side of the Federation. I’m sure its very Brave New World-ish.

But that's like having a really cherry 62' corvette but never driving it. Unless you are a hermit, you HAVE to show it off....;-)

I know this is nit picking, but dampening is getting something wet. Damping is prolonging a moment of force.

Just finished watching 200 episodes of Stargate SG1. They don’t pussyfoot around with that Star Trek ‘no interference’ crap. They kill a lot of bad guys too.

Although it boggles my mind how you dampen 'inertia'!

It's actually a multiple-layered combination field. Each layer has an increasing level of effective density and a narrower projection, with the widest and "softest" part of the multi-field facing the ship. Kind of like one of those highway collision stacks of exploding trash cans of filler - first just a few, then more and more. Except instea of crushing and exploding trash cans, the ship transfers its momentum into heat through the spread out, thickening-density layered fields. And for safety belts, the ship doesn't actually touch the inertia dampening fields - an anti-gravity bubble field does, so the actual inertia is transferred from the AG field to the ID fields.

:: shrug ::

Simple.

Like most science fiction writers, he was naive and of course wrote to his own personal biases. Clearly he was liberal and was a known globalist. And of course his stories were always full of liberal contradiction logic. Every story the prime directive got violated while Kirk or Spock preached about it not being their nature to interfere in other races internal affairs. The federation folks always talked about being peaceful and on quests for knowledge yet every show the phasers never got to cool down long. And just how exactly did anyone get paid for anything, did anyone get more for doing the harder or more dangerous jobs? Totally disassociating value from work.

Liberal illogic abounded. I enjoy the ship designs and scifi technology. Stories generally sucked.

Lyrics to Star Trek theme song

Beyond the rim of the starlight,
my love is wand’ring in star flight.
I know he’ll find
In star clustered reaches
Love, strange love
A starwoman teaches.

I know his journey ends never.
His Star Trek will go on forever.
But tell him while
He wanders his starry sea,
Remember,
Remember me.

...in a society where all material needs are met by the matter replicator why would you want to own and work in a restaurant or own and maintain a primitive mountain cabin?

I think it was (at least implied) that replicator food was somewhat flat and tasteless. I think Bones said it in the series and the movie.

What we would consider "cafeteria food"

The higher ups get the real food, not the synthetic replicator fare for the masses

So there must be a market for real food thus somebody to provide it.

Thus in this utopia, there are divisions in society.

(gawd, I'm more of a geek than I thought)

Never. Space is extremely dangerous, and filled with massive amounts of energy and radiation. Every ship, no matter how small, operates within forcefield bubbles of various kinds to protect it from EM radiation, scalar and gravitic forces, etc. To lose your force field protection is to die a quick death, even if you are a battleship.

It uses the same basic principles as the warp field, di-lithium crystals, FTL subspace communications, and time travel by slingshotting past the sun. It’s FICTION. Superman can’t really fly either. :-(

DON'T TELL ME THAT STUFF!

My brain cannot handle that.
