The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a division of the Interior Department, is considering loosening regulations on the killing of bald eagles, the national bird of the United States, to accommodate the development of wind energy sources.
A draft regulation first filed in April would allow businesses to apply for 30-year permits allowing them to kill bald eagles in the course of other legal activities. The length of those permits would be a six-fold increase over the five-year window allowed under current law.
The USFWS explains at FederalRegister.gov:
We have reviewed applications from proponents of renewable energy projects, such as wind and solar power facilities, for programmatic permits to authorize eagle take that may result from both the construction and ongoing operations of renewable energy projects. During our review, it became evident that the 5-year term limit imposed by the 2009 regulations (see 50 CFR 22.26(h)) needed to be extended to better correspond to the timeframe of renewable energy projects.
Current law allows permitting for programmatic killing of bald eagles, which is recurring, is not caused solely by indirect effects, and that occurs over the long term or in a location or locations that cannot be specifically identified.
The USFWS notes that permits may authorize lethal take that is incidental to an otherwise lawful activity, such as mortalities caused by collisions with rotating wind turbines.
According to the regulation, measures will be taken to attempt to minimize bald eagle mortalities, and additional actions may be authorized if mortalities exceed anticipated levels. USFWS began investigating numerous bald eagle deaths associated with wind turbines in early 2012.
Without the proper permit, the killing of a bald eagle is a federal crime.
So, it is OK to kill the symbol of our country - the magnificent Bald Eagle for the sake of wind energy?
Out here in West Texas, we may not be able to drill because of a stupid lizard!
I hate libs.
I read that the Oregon forest is now over supplied with owls and the Interior Department has a plan to kill some of them.
Global Warming (carbon credits and much regulation and kickbacks), Green Energy (multi-billion dollar loans that don't get paid back), subsidized electric cars that couldn't pull a greased stick out of a cat's a$$....that's where the real money is at, folks.
The expansion of politically correct crony capialism continues.
“Hypocrisy” is definitely the first word that comes to mind.
Instead of the Hippocratic Oath, like doctors, they all take the Hypocritic Oath.
For the true believers the ends always justify the means.
Is ok to kill eagles for GREEN WINDMILLS, but not some stupid minnows in California that have stopped the farming of thousands of acres. The eagle represents the USA, but what the f&&k does a frigging minnow contribute ?? !! ??
Meanwhile, east of the Mississippi we have thousands of existing dams of which a sizable percentage are adequate to produce power. Instead of using them, we’re tearing them out.
Let’s not even mention the ocean of natural gas under the great lakes that are under a federal drilling ban.
WELCOME TO THE OBAMA IDIOCRACY
That is correct - the Barred Owl has moved into the Spotted Owl’s supposed territory and pushed them out. The Forest Service plans to kill over one thousand of these beautiful birds to make room for Spotted Owls that aren’t there.
It is utter lunacy - at the same time, finding a Bald Eagle feather on the ground and taking it home can get you time in federal prison. But killing our national symbol for a stinking windmill will be approved - it’s the bizarro world on steroids.
A “draft regulation” on wind energy? Too funny!
Indeed. It’s tough to think of a better metaphor than this administration sponsoring the wholesale slaughter of Bald Eagles in the name of *progress*.
Another martyr to the Green Energy Cult.
WhereTF is PETA. Hey, PETA - a turbine is a bigger target than an eagle .. oh that’s right - you don’t shoot. PETA might be an endangered species now.
Something is fundamentally wrong with our government.
We can’t drill in Alaska because there is speculation about Caribeau impact.
We can’t drill in W. Texas because of a lizard.
We can’t drill in Oregan because of an Owl.
We can’t drill in the Gulf because of shrimp.
We can’t drill in Michigan because they are all liberals.
We can’t upgrade refineries (make cleaner) near Chicago because of Lake Michigan.
BUT, we it’s ok to kill Bald Eagles with wind turbines.
Ironic isn't it? Blackbears and cougars have been reported in Indiana in the last few years. The DNR had repeatedly stated and continues to report that we don't have blackbears in IN. (Pictures of one cougar don't count)Nevermind that Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky all have blackbear populations. Meanwhile, it's legal to shoot Coyotes on site if you are a land owner because they have become a predatory nuisance.
There has been discussion about what to do if Blackbears start to populate northern IN. They are worried that, like the coyote, they will threaten native wild life. (What?)
What the hell is native wildlife. It just so happens that when "wildlife" moves in, they become "natives." The animals don't read maps that well and don't realize the government is keeping track of what they hunt and kill. It is rediculous and getting worse.
Liberalism is a mental disease....
Yes, and then they're going to give the 40,000 loggers, truck-drivers and sawmill operators their jobs back.
Not.
