I am needing some help in buying a gift for my husband please. I have about $80 left to spend for this christmas gift. He knows the other gifts he is getting and I would really like to surprise him with this one. I know he would love a good scotch. Money has been very very tight until about a month ago and the best scotch I have seen him ever buy is Makers Mark but he'll say that it is okay but not great. I have no idea what is good in this price range. I read a prior post and it gave few price references. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much & Merry Christmas to all!
Oban.
Makers Mark is a bourbon, not a scotch, Lily. Are you sure you want to buy him scotch?
Makers Mark while a whisky is not a Scotch. The term sort of implies the whisky is made in Scotland.
Johnnie Walker Black, or if he likes single malt, Glenfiddich.
The answer is in Black & White.......
You took the words right out of my mouth.
Awesome stuff.
If we post at exactly the same time are we sorted alphabetically by our nickname?
Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch
best scotch is single malt, IMHO, and Glenfiddich ranks one of my favorites — great sippin’ whisky.
Makers Mark is a whiskey, not a whisky. :-) Only Scotch is whisky.
Gunner
Glenfiddich 15 year solera is best you can get.. for the price you pay.
D’oh!
I have tasted almost every imaginable kind of scotch. Lots of Freepers will weigh in and try to out single-malt each other with the kinchies and the aberlours and obans and laphroiags and all sorts of other nonsense. If your husband likes “scotch,” save your money and get him a nice bottle of 10 year Glenfiddich - a classic, and not snooty. There is no difference between a 10 year old single malt and an 18 year old single malt that a drop of “liquid smoke” can’t fix. It’s almost ALL marketing. And my favorites are the plain old, lovely blended scotches like Red or Black Label (Johnnie Walker), and even J&B (which has won MANY taste tests and was once NOT considered “declasse.” Smooth, cultured taste without the feeling you’re chewing on spanish moss over a bonfire.
I didn’t know that. He never buys himself liquor I have only seen him buy that bottle and since he has mentioned wanting a good scotch I guess I figured they were the same. I drink wine myself so that just shows how lost I am in this area :)
I am afraid that you are confused. Makers Mark is a bourbon whisky, NOT a scotch. Bourbon and scotch are very, very different tasting.
