Obama Conscripts ISPs as "Copyright Cops", Unveils "Six Strikes" Plan

ISPs begrudgingly accept their conscriptment

Copyright enforcement is a big headache. It's a big headache for the media industry as it's a money-losing proposition. It's a big headache for the U.S. Senate who had nearly 10 percent of their collective campaign expenses paid by media lobbyists.

It seems neither the federal government or big media wants to pay themselves for the massive cost of copyright enforcement, so they've cooked up a clever plan -- force internet service providers to become copyright cops and police the internet.

>

The plan was inspired by similar plans proposed in other nations (most of which didn't pass) [1][2][3].

The plan is reportedly the work of several powerful players, led by the Obama administration. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) is also thought to have played a key role in bringing the parties together for talks.

Victoria Espinel, US Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator, cheers the plan commenting, "The joining of Internet service providers and entertainment companies in a cooperative effort to combat online infringement can further this goal [of supporting jobs and exports] and we commend them for reaching this agreement. We believe it will have a significant impact on reducing online piracy."

She says conscripting ISPs to act as copyright police is the key to "win the future".

Now, let’s see what this means TO THE PEOPLE NOW USING the Internet (As “agents” against Obama’s policies.

If “you” (anybody on FreeRepublic or ANY OTHER pro-capitalist/pro-freedom website) begin copying the NY Times or the Washington Post or LA Times or UPI or AP article, then Jim Robinson becomes liable criminally back through HIS internet provider for the message. If the provider “materially assists” in not assaulting and restraining (assumed) the copyright use, then that internet provider becomes equally compliant.

Result?

The internet providers become reluctant to offer websites that oppose any administration activity!

“There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.

“Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted and you create a nation of law-breakers - and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Rearden, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”

Ridiculous! When an ISP is handed material to post on a client's website, the ISP posts it as he is paid to do. The ISP cannot be an expert in all the industries of all the clients the ISP possesses. The ISP cannot be expected to recognize copyrighted material when he sees it. It is an unfair and completely ridiculous standard being suggested.

Simply means ISPs will move to friendly countries, just like industry, captial, and everything else that makes money and provides jobs.

All part of the Obama plan to destroy America.

And to think that it all started with the government making businesspeople unpaid and unloved tax collectors. Ye've come a long way since the withholding tax (which was another "temporary" war measure.)

You may not use TPB, but we have the same ideas who to get good quality series from ;)

No doubt about it. And how about all the folks that use content management systems to update their own sites? Their ISP is responsible for knowing who changed what when and whether or not that change complies with copyright laws? The stupidity of some our "leaders" astounds me.

They cannot shut down TPB, because TPB’s server is located “somewhere’ in the world. So’s a couple of warez-related servers. No one knows except for the owners of the site.

Heck, I still download from iSOHUNT, even though by “court order” the US ip addresses are barred from accessing the search engine. I have an IP changer which makes mine Germany, and bwa-la, I have it. If you know how to tweak your Peerguardian app, then you have no problem accessing a VPN for downloads.

Wow, I didn’t know that the states put a block on TPB :o
Lol.. I still sometimes use ISOHunt when I can’t find something on TPB..

Just how far has the govt gone in limiting the net back in the states? I haven’t had any problems here yet.. hope it stays that way.

TPb is darn available in America. ISOHUNT’s database under court order from the 9th District Court which was ordered to remove it, but under a legal loophole, ISOHUNT is still available in America but the search engine is not working.

When I volunteered years ago to do the karaoke for True Tears, we just changed our sub group and ‘announced” that we were not subbing it...but we uploaded it on NYAA.EU eventually after we got the cease’ and desist letter from Funimation.
