Cain: Gun control should be a “state’s decision”
HotAir ^ | June 8, 2011 | Jazz Shaw

BLITZER: How about gun control?

CAIN: I support the 2nd amendment.

B: So what’s the answer on gun control?

C: The answer is I support, strongly support, the 2nd amendment. I don’t support onerous legislation that’s going to restrict people’s rights in order to be able to protect themselves as guaranteed by the 2nd amendment.

B: Should states or local government be allowed to control guns, the gun situation, or should…

C: Yes

B: Yes?

C: Yes.

B: So the answer is yes?

C: The answer is yes, that should be a state’s decision.

Sorry, Herman, but any chance of my support for you just ended.

The 2nd Amendment is no more negotiable than any of the other Amendments and it pains me that you think otherwise.

Can’t argue with this, as long as the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution is upheld within the states and localities. Having said that, I’d like to hear more from him on this.

You know, I really do like Cain but this is just a dumb answer.

First Amendment -- "CONGRESS shall make no law ..." Okay, if you wanted to make the case that a state could abridge freedom of speech and religion, you might have some ground to stand on.

Second Amendment -- "The right to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT be infringed". Not by the feds. Not by the states. Not by the towns. No one. It is an absolute right.

Cain ought to know this.

That he sees individual states as sovereign is encouraging.

Another one bites the dust. Cain is a silly candidate anyway. Just a way to avoid making a real choice.

I agree that individual states are sovereign in 10th Amendment issues. But the *rights of the people* are supposed to be inalienable regardless of what state you live in because they are the RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE that are not specifically reserved to the states.

Sorry, but if he doesn’t grasp that then I do not want him in the White House appointing Supreme Court justices who will let states like California, Illinois, New York, and etc. trample on gun rights.

Except that they’re not.

Except that they are.

U.S. Constitution - Amendment 10

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

I agree to the point that CCW cards are unconstitutional because they infringe on my rights to keep and bear arms. I do not think any citizen should have to obtain permission from the sheriff or police to buy, own or carry a weapon.

It’s getting ugly. This from an interview with David Brody apparently today:

Brody: Some of your potential biggest weaknesses out there. What is something you have to shore up?

Cain: I’m working real hard on understanding heads of state, on other countries around the world, being able to pronounce their names properly. Being able to have their proper title when I talk about them in that context. Yes, that is an area that I have not focused on because when I was doing my radio show, foreign affairs didn’t come up that often in terms of what my listeners wanted.

They wanted me to talk about the economy, creating jobs; we talked a lot about immigration. We talked a lot about how do we reform entitlement spending and Medicare. So I’m very conversant on those because I have had to interact with my listeners for five years when I was on the radio. So when it comes to other nations, friend or foe, I have a lot of homework to do, but I’m in the process of doing that homework to get up to speed.

I'm not with you on that, at least not if Cain apologizes, learns, and never again makes a similar mistake. The Second Amendment is absolutely non-negotiable, but I am willing to accept that Cain misspoke and later recognized the correct answer [. . . waiting for Cain to correct his near-fatal error].

Can we get a candidate who is remotely ready for the job? Is that too much to ask? This guy’s breadth of experience is selling pizza and taking calls on the radio??
