Chili, slaw, mustard and onions on a burger. The best I had was the Sub Shop in Boone NC.
Boone also has a place that used Velveeta for the cheese called the Midtown Restaurant. That was really good. Both places are gone now.

We have a 5 Guys. It’s pretty much the best burger in town but a lot of people still swear by Mike’s Burgers next to Virginia Tech

If you like spicy sauce on your burgers a good secret is to go to combo fish & chips/burger stands because a lot of the secret sauces at those places will be spicy. You can never go wrong at the places that have separate Order and Pick up windows. In Tulsa, the place to go is Ralph' Fish & Burger Shack:
Ralph's Fish & Burger Shack
I always feel safe in places like this since the owners are typically self made men who are fully prepared to defend their place of business:

If your travels take you thru New Haven, CT you have to check out Louis’ Lunch on Crown Street. Great hamburgers, prepared Louis’ way ... lunch hour only. Louis’ has been in business since 1895.

I have heard of In and Out Burgers, what makes them so good?Other than a trip down memory lane for me (Cue the Beach Boys playing "I Get Around"), fresh tomato, crisp lettuce, sliced onion, toasted bun and secret sauce of course. Each one made fresh to order, perfectly grilled and no over-the-top two pound stunt patty. It's a burger you can actually pick up and eat. the "Animal" which is not on the menu, has grilled onions.

My mistake, It was the name of a road that I keyed in on. From the interwebs:
The Clown Burger at 5512 E. Belknap in Haltom City had been in existence
since 1959, long before I moved to Fort Worth in 1977. It was quite popular.
We occasionally had somebody run down there to get lunch for all of us at work.
On July 4, 1994, they opened a second location at Haltom Road and Stanley-Keller
and called it Clown Burger Too. They had both locations open for about a year, and
then closed the Belknap location. According to Bill Louthan, the owner, they have been open
every year since then, except they close a few times a year to take a break.
The main location I think was a very old building and closed a few times possibly
due to flooding.
