Michael Vick’s Stats Can’t Hide The Monster Within
Grand Rants ^ | 11/19/10 | Gerry Ashley

For a long time, it has been the opinion of all three writers here at Grand Rants that Pro Sports, like the entertainment world in general, is emblematic of all that is wrong with American Society: Greed, avarice, and the absolute willingness to rush headlong towards the lowest common denominator in society and cling to it as if it were an enviable aspiration. We Americans have come to embrace hype over substance and are willing to look the other way at any and all behavior, no matter how abhorrent, as long as the person is good-looking or famous. Nothing illustrates this so well as the media and public response to celebrities and professional athletes...and, as a society, we’re too damned stupid to even understand what, exactly, we’re missing.

And let’s not forget that whole “Ron Mexico” thing.

There’s plenty of talented “Michael Vicks” out there who don’t obtain a sick pleasure out of seeing dogs forced into situations where it’s “Maul or BE mauled.”

If you are suggesting that there are a lot of people with the physical gifts and sheer talent as Michael Vick you are crazy. The reason Michael Vick got a 2nd chance in the NFL is that he is an extremely rare commodity -- probably unique in terms of his capability mix.

Vick paid the price. While we can argue over the sincerity of his repentance, there is pretty much zero chance that he will repeat as a dog-fighting aficionado.

Dogs aren’t people. Time to move on.

True, you can't give dogs Herpes.

A single statement saying he’s sorry doesn’t hack it. Of course he is going to say that... HE GOT CAUGHT. AND IT COST HIM TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

Follow Vick around. He is under orders to speak before groups of so-called at-risk youths about what he did, and generally about being a good citizen. This was mandated by the league as part of his re-admittance and the Eagles are charged with enforcing it.

No if ESPN doesn't cover it, and the sports page makes no mention of it, I guess it didn't happen???

You don't like what Vick did... fine. Say your piece. I happen to be an Eagles fan and I don't appreciate being painted with your broad-brush. Stow it.

Someone stated, previously, that we’re all sinners and that no one sin is greater than another. You don’t even have to believe in God to acknowledge that we’ve all done something that was unjust. I’ve owned working dogs all of my life and I’ve been a sports fan as well but I’ve never elevated either to the level of worship!

“Why can’t we view people and animals the same way “

A human is infinitely more valuable than an animal. But there is no reason to exhibit cruelty to animals either.

The accused in Texas was not convicted of rape. He plead to an assualt. She was removed from the squad because she would not follow instructions to cheer for the entire team. It is pretty silly for the school to do what it did, but it was within their rights.

Vick served his time and the commisioner (who I dont like) let him back in. We are all free to still not like Vick, but the reality is, he is back, and he is playing insane football.

How many serial killers started with animals?

How many people involved with dog fighting as sport went on to kill people? 3 or 4 ?

He harmed animals; not people. Aborting one baby is a thousand times worse than what Vick did.

So, the 'mother' who aborted should be executed for murder-right?

And what is your take on abortion-since you believe it is murder, should the woman who had the abortion be executed?

Why does every animal abuse issue end up with some anti-abortionist showing up and telling us how awful abortion is?

And where in any of these posts did you see anyone say such a thing?

People who are cruel to animals are the one incapable of human love (Pr.12:10)

Yes, dogfighting attracts the most noble in our society.

Just because he isn't "noble" , doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to play proffessional football. Most of the people watching him aren't noble either.

A lot of the same people spent countless hours worrying about that stupid race hourse, Barbarosa, who died because he was cruelly forced to run against other horses. Not one of them said a word about banning horse racing when it is widely known that many horses die when they break down while training or racing.

That wasn't what I was commenting on.

The comment was in response to a flippant response made to the fact that many criminals are involved in animal abuse.

Cruelty is a way of life for them.

Cruelty is a way of life for them.

Cruelty to animals is unsavory, loathsome and debasing, but its not in the same category as cruelty to humans, and dosent deserve the same punishment. That was my point.

I’ll forgive Vick... just as soon as those dogs who were tortured and killed by him and his goonsquad are able to be resurrected, and live the playful, normal life God intended for them to have.

No one condones what he did. But they were dogs, after all, not people.

One question: have you ever taken the time or energy to write a rant like that in defense of unborn human babies who are tortured and killed legally every single day in this country?
