Michael Vick’s Stats Can’t Hide The Monster Within
Grand Rants ^ | 11/19/10 | Gerry Ashley

For a long time, it has been the opinion of all three writers here at Grand Rants that Pro Sports, like the entertainment world in general, is emblematic of all that is wrong with American Society: Greed, avarice, and the absolute willingness to rush headlong towards the lowest common denominator in society and cling to it as if it were an enviable aspiration. We Americans have come to embrace hype over substance and are willing to look the other way at any and all behavior, no matter how abhorrent, as long as the person is good-looking or famous. Nothing illustrates this so well as the media and public response to celebrities and professional athletes...and, as a society, we’re too damned stupid to even understand what, exactly, we’re missing.

Like actors, sports figures are neither heroes nor saints.

If you don't believe in repentance, you can't be a Christian.

I don't know what's in Mike Vick's heart, but I'll take him at his word that he regrets what he did--and not just because it cost him a boatload of money.

I believe in repentance--I just don't believe Vick. It's not about "something Vick did". It's about "what kind of person can continually do what Vick did?" I'll tell you what kind--an evil sadistic psychopath.

I remember seeing him give an interview (60 Minutes, maybe?) in which he said he cried in prison. The interviewer asked why he cried, and the dog-killer said "you know..'bout what I did..and puttin' my fambly though all dis..."

He should have said "I cried when I saw what a horrible person I was". And all you "it was only dogs, get over it" types don't get it either. The fact that he preyed upon lesser animals simply shows the depth of his depravity.

It would be one thing if he was just an average guy doing an average job. But it is wrong to put a guy like dog-killer Vick in a position where he represents a home town. If any team I root for hired that monster the team would be as dead to me.

Psssst...all humans are psychopaths. Christ was killed by psychopaths and died for all us psychopaths. At best, all Christians are “recovering psychopaths”....we have no life and hope except that which God bestows on all of us.

“For the heart is desparately wicked; who can know it”

Sounds like psychopathology to me!

Why would you think a normal joe who loses his job because he goes to prison, couldn’t get their old job back, or another job somewhere, once they had served their time?

Do you think that everybody who cmmits a crime should be on welfare the rest of their lives?

By complaining about Vick getting an NFL job, you are really playing right into the “sports people are special, so they should have special rules” meme that you seemed to be upset about.

The guy did a crime, he did the time, if he stays clean now, he has a right to make a living.

I never said he’s a hero. He’s an athlete, there’s a difference. He’s not even on my favorite team.

But anybody that thinks this kind of forgiveness is unique to sports needs to look up Operation Paperclip. The fact is only religious leaders get paid to be moral, anybody else will have their sins forgiven so long as they can continue to perform. That’s the way it’s always been, that’s the way it’s always going to be.

How many serial killers started with animals?

1 “Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 2 “For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. 3 “Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye? 5 “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
6 “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

I'm a dog lover. I'll admit it right up front. Our bullmastiff Sampson died when our son was 6 months old. Telling my parents was the worst phone call of my life, and I pray to God that it will remain the worst phone call of my life.

What disturbs me about this is the sociopathic way the dogs were killed. If they wanted to get rid of the dogs, put a bullet in each dog's head and be done with it. Electrocution? Drowning? Those who did this need checkups from the necks up. If they did this to dogs, what have they done and/or what will they do to humans?

***He paid in full for his stupidity.
That’s enough.***

No, he didn’t. You can never, EVER, pay for the pain deliberately committed on any innocent and helpless creature. If Vics had gone to jail for life, the pain would still have been there for his victims. And when you impress youngsters with your physical skills, you have double the responsibility to be a good influence.

"Doesn’t make me or anyone else there a psychopath"

...to you and your fellow cockfighting enthusiasts maybe. Did you really enjoyed watching two really pissed off birds slicing each other to pieces? Because, to the majority, that is pretty twisted. People that enjoy pitting two of any species against each other, be it roosters, dogs or human beings in a boxing or MMA(?) ring or gladiator forum, where the goal is to inflict physical damage on each other... that's not sane, my friend. That is twisted. If somebody gets any measure of joy out of it, that person has issues. IMHO, of course.

The self-appointed arbiters of justice see themselves as wiser than the rest of us and would rather kiss a dog than show another human being love.

***He harmed animals; not people. Aborting one baby is a thousand times worse than what Vick did.***

You are absolutely right, but that’s like saying that I’m not going to have an abortion, so I have the right to torture dogs. There’s no right to do either.

I am just always surprised at the difference in how people view animal treatment vs human treatment.

It seems like people view humans and animals on the same plane, which is very very wrong.

I’ve never looked up to any celebrity, sports person OR politician in my entire life. There has never been any of them that would be worthy of my LOOKING UP to them.

While I may like, respect and enjoy one person or another I have looked up to only three people in my entire life. My parents and my husband. They were WORTHY.

The rest are just plain people to me. Not impressed by any of them...

To paraphrase your statement: The self-appointed arbiters of justice would rather heap honor on one who has deliberately caused grievous pain to helpless animals in order to make money, than show love for all of God’s creatures.

I don’t think it is wrong. Why can’t we view people and animals the same way and treat them both with kindness and love instead of abortion and cruelty? Sounds simple enough to me. They both deserve the same kind treatment we all want for ourselves.

I don’t view people and humans on the same plane, that’s ridiculous. But I don’t believe it’s right to torture either.
