Every Day Sarah Palin Gets Closer to Being President
Newser ^ | August 5, 2010 | Michael Wolff, Newser founder & Vanity Fair editor

Sarah Palin’s going to run for president.

She is running. Hers is the most long-term dedicated campaign since Ronald Reagan left the governorship of California in 1975 and became a full-time presidential aspirant.

Notably, the very act of running doesn’t cost her resources, but creates resources for her. She’s self-sustaining. Every day her organization builds and her reach expands. The more she runs the more inevitable she is.

In a nutshell, the system, meant to filter out the oddballs, has allowed one in. Never before has someone so outside the mainstream of political conventions had such good national prospects. She’s a classic third-party candidate who, given the organizational benefits of an early and dedicated candidacy, the fundraising advantages of a narrowly targeted base, and the boon of her preternatural access to the media, might easily become a major party candidate. And, given the Republican party’s built-in near-50% share of the voting public, she’s as likely to become the next president as anyone.

Many things could, of course, derail her. Not least of all if the opposition comes up with a way to effectively characterize her distance from political norms. So far this has been a problem, though, because part of her attractiveness is that distance, and, too, she is distant in ways that are themselves not normal and hard to characterize. Her extremism is not so much fanatical as it is kooky—or even comical. The worst thing that can be said about her, so far, is that she is not too smart—wily, but dumb. In a nation that, arguably, has become progressively dumber (or, at least, less interested in what used to be considered smart), this isn’t much of a liability. The real annoyance, even perhaps more than her inchoate conservatism (arguably, no more inchoate than George Bush’s), is her tastelessness. That, too, is hard for the opposition to express—other than in a fumfering way.

The threat for her is that the Republican establishment, which finds her as dumb and tasteless as the Democrats do, will come up with some stolid figure of conservative probity. But saying it that way highlights the problem of competing against an original, vivid, and always engaging outsider. Possibly a Republican congressional sweep will give the Republican mainstream new resolve. But, as likely, Sarah Palin will take credit for that success—and she might deserve it.

It’s happening, which is extraordinary.

preternatural access to the media
How about the Left's preternatural predilection to attack Palin?

I love Sarah Palin but she’ll lose on the National ticket. The Repubs have to be smarter with who they chose, even though I personally think she’s great.

Well, they still think she’s kooky, dumb, and tasteless, but they think the same about two-thirds of America too. What’s different now is that Obama is on the skids and they can actually see her succeeding. And they are aware of the fact that their disdain only makes her shine brighter than ever.

Americans like candidates they've never heard of before so they can imagine the candidate is just like them. Like it or not Palin has been defined. She is definitely the king-maker but I'm not sure she can maker herself king.

"The Repubs have to be smarter with who they chose, even though I personally think she’s great."

Huh?

I personally think she's great, too. By my kind of thinking she's "great" finds her the best possible candidate to run this country for the next four years after O'Bunga. Because four years of just another run-of-the-mill, gutless, go-along-to-get-along, socialist-lite GOP hack just won't cut it any more.

Ever.

I guess mine is a sincere "I think she's great."

Know what I mean?

Well, it doesn't take much observation to observe that approximately two-thirds of America is either kooky, dumb or tasteless. You need to look no further than the number of Obama voters and the current music and celebrity scene to agree.

preternatural : beyond what is normal or natural

Inchoate: just begun and so not fully formed or developed; rudimentary

fumfering: Help me out somebody, I got nothing.

"Like it or not Palin has been defined."

Yup. Just like old "Bedtime for Bonzo" Ronnie Reagan was "defined," ridiculed and reviled by the left. Poor li'l ole Palin just hasn't got a chance...

Not sure I agree. Presidential elections aren't really "national" elections per se, even though the MSM seems to think it is. Keep in mind there were seven states that Obama won in 08 that Bush won in 00 and 04. (NV, CO, IN, OH, VA, NC, and FL). Unless something really strange happens, there's where the Presidency will be won or lost. Can Palin win those states? I could be wrong, but I think it's certainly possible.

I really think that Sarah Palin is the only one that could take the presidency away from the idiot and chief..We all know what the media is all about and I do not think people will be fooled again about this intelligent woman..We all know the only one that will vote for Obama are the dead and the blacks, Mickey Mouse, and Minnie, maybe Donald Duck..Look at the money that these idiot's are spending our money,2 million on the trip to Spain for the Ugly one and her friends..

ACORN is gone so they won't have those criminal's to help them..the only one would be the black panthers, but we could put some really big guys at every poll these idiots go to,it would scare the crap out of the skinny idiots..they would need more than a billy club to scare someone..Oh and make sure you escort your mama and granny and papa's not let the fools scare them..
