As one reads our founding documents, our Declaration of Independence, our Constitution, it’s truly remarkable how elegant and inspiring these documents are. Our Declaration has shone like a beacon of Freedom and Liberty worldwide and has inspired men in other nations to stand up and demand their own God Given Rights of Freedom, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. It’s the most significant political document ever written.

Our Constitution is the envy of the world. Our Constitution is designed to allow Americans the chance to excel, to succeed in ways others can only dream of. It places maximum emphasis on Individual Rights and Freedoms, and seeks to restrain government, which by nature, seeks power.

Yes, truly inspiring. That’s why it was a revolution: the idea that the people could govern themselves. It’s called the American Revolution because we were the first to actually put it into play. It has taken over 200 years for those who want to control others to take over this government of the people. Not a bad run, but it’s now time to push these people aside, let them run their own little country, so we freedom loving people can get back to keeping the government as the slave and we the master.

We had an event on Friday where the gubernatorial candidates had a debate. There were three candidates: Brian Sandovol - Gov Jim Gibbons and Mike Montandon.

At one point Sandovol pulls a pocket-sized version of the Constitution out- which he says he carries all the time - and waves it at the crowd saying:

This is the document that guarantees us the right to Life - Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. . . Mmmmm - I think he needs to actually read the Constitution and not just carry it around.

C'mon Mike - we're pulling for you!

It's amazing. So many politicians who run for office seeking power, have not learned humilty and the simple rule to never speak on subjects about which you are not well versed or even familiar with. Bullshit smells and people can detect it from a mile away.

You may have a point. However, the words in the Declaration of Independence explain why we have a government (to secure these rights) and why the powers of government should be limited.

When our founding fathers decided they’d had enough of British oppression they broke away and declared independence. They stated as self evident truth in the Declaration of Independence “Men … are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights”. In other words, God gave man his rights and that among them are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. In the very next sentence, the founders defined the proper role of government when they stated “…that to secure these rights, Governments are instituted.”

Unalienable Rights, which means government did not give them nor can government take them away.

Those select words explain why we have a written Constitution that limits the powers of government.

It wasn’t what government did that made America great, it was what government was preventing from doing that made the difference. What set America apart from other lands was freedom for the individual, freedom to work, to produce, to succeed, and especially to keep the fruits of one’s labors. American became great precisely because America prevented the stifling effect of too much government.

Exactly - My point was that he was trying to one up the other two candidates and made the quote attributing it to the constitution. If you are going to be an “expert” on something, make sure you have the context correct. :)

“that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men. . . “

Not one in a hundred understand that the purpose of our federal government is to secure our Natural, Unalienable Rights. That is all. It does not exist to transfer income, dictate what sort of autos we drive . . . etc.

The Constitution put the Founder's Natural Law philosophy into practice, the protection of our Natural Rights. It is only in the context of Natural Law that our Declaration and Constitution form a coherent whole.
