The New York Times defends the "rights of illegal immigrants."

Which part of "illegal" does the New York Times not understand?

In an editorial that appeared on Christmas Day, "Getting Immigration Right," the Times made the following ridiculous statements:

It’s way too early to tell whether the United States under President-elect Barack Obama will restore realism, sanity and lawfulness to its immigration system...

If you uphold workers’ rights, even for those here illegally, you uphold them for all working Americans. If you ignore and undercut the rights of illegal immigrants, you encourage the exploitation that erodes working conditions and job security everywhere.

This is why it is so important to reverse the Bush administration’s immigration tactics, which for years have attacked the problem upside down and backward. To appease Republican nativists, it lavished scarce resources solely on hunting down and punishing illegal immigrants. Its campaign of raids, detentions and border fencing was a moral failure. Among other things, it terrorized and broke apart families and led to some gruesome deaths in shoddy prisons. It mocked the American tradition of welcoming and assimilating immigrant workers.

But it also was a strategic failure because it did little or nothing to stem the illegal tide while creating the very conditions under which the off-the-books economy can thrive. Illegal immigrant workers are deterred from forming unions. And without a path to legalization and under the threat of a relentless enforcement-only regime, they cannot assert their rights.

“We welcome immigrants who respsct the legal process and desire assimilation. Unfortunately those types are becoming increasingly rare.”

What is the legal process?

*Invest half a million dollars——ok that’s great but there aren’t a lot of people with that kind of money in other countries

*Marry an American? If you’re outside the country, it’s pretty difficult to build a long term relationship with an American. But it happens, ok.

*Win the green card lottery? There is only 1 chance in 200 to win, so good luck with that.

*Get a temporary work visa? First you gotta find an employer from oversees that agrees to sponsor you at the right time (only one day possible for the H1B visas per year) and pay the fees without even knowing you. Then you gotta pray to enter in the quota (the quota is reached in only one day each year; actually they get too many applications in one day, so they decided that a lucky draw will design the lucky winners who will be able to come in the US temporarily). After that? well, you have to go to the embassy and swear that you want to stay in the US only for 18 months or 3 years (for those with a college degree) and then return to the country of origin. So this isn’t really immigration.

Today’s rules of immigration are not the same as they were 100 years ago. It’s way more difficult and impossible for a lot of people. Even for those who want to respect the legal process and desire assimilation.

I’m not defending the illegal immigrants but there should be a POSSIBLE legal way for people to immigrate to the US for those who like the US enough to learn English and maybe learn a bit about US History and the Constitution.

Agreed, the system is broken. However, the Rats, and many Republicrats, have no desire to fix it. They like things just the way they are. The Republicrats corporate buddies get plenty of free slave labor and the Rats get the Illegal auto votes they crave and need to stay in power. For the time being its a win-win situation for both of the traitorous factions.

Unfortunately the inevitable day of reckoning is not far off now. Once there is enough illegals in the country the Civil War will begin as actual Americans are openly attacked and driven out of the Illegal enclaves. Law and order will completely break down in these areas as even the police will refuse to enter these no go zones. At that point, its on and nothing will prevent the breakup. Already, its rare to hear English spoken in many border towns like El Paso.

If you uphold workers’ rights, even for those here illegally, you uphold them for all working Americans. If you ignore and undercut the rights of illegal immigrants, you encourage the exploitation that erodes working conditions and job security everywhere.

By allowing millions of illegal aliens to enter the US job market, you undercut the earning potential of US citizens who compete for the lower paying jobs. You reduce the standard of living of the Americans who earn the least, and turn once attractive jobs in the construction industry into low paying jobs few Americans want in areas overrun by illegals.

And, nothing erodes the job security of US citizens more than allowing illegals into the job market.

It'd be a supreme challenge for anyone to work more nonsense and lies into a couple of sentences than this writer did above.

Is that so? Any who likes the US should be able to come here? Do you have any numerical upper limit you'd place on those who'd like to immigrate to the US. We take in around 1,200,000 legally each year. How many do you think we should take in?

Give us a number.

Right on target, Polarik!

The Slimes, like the bulk of the MSM, is spewing the same inane leftist garbage that was a major factor in the election of "Osama" Obama last month.

But they are even wackier than this editorial would indicate: their support of "rights" for illegal aliens extends all the way to a purported "right" of an illegal alien to hold the presidency, the Constitution be damned!

Of course not - nor should they be the same. The world has changed. America is a different (inter alia: more-crowded) place.

It’s way more difficult and impossible for a lot of people.

Good! I'm glad that it is impossible for a lot of people - a lot of people shouldn't come here!

We should accept only the cream of the crop.

Regards,

Let them keep on with their left/wing tripe. They will get fewer and fewer advertisers, drop even further in circulation and in a few years we will become the msm. It's already happening.

Their choice is keep on like they are going or get fair and balanced. Since the latter will never work for them expect to see their continual slowly decline into the depths of a bad business model.

A Possible way?? How many? How many would you allow to immigrate here legally each year?

How many do you think we allow in legally now?

I asked the same question and since the poster didn’t answer you, I will. Actually we take in more than 2 million LEGALLY every year and that doesn’t include certain asylum seekers such as the El Salvadorians by the tens of thousands, etc.

http://uscis.gov/graphics/publicaffairs/DayinLife_050629.pdf (click here to see orignial document)

Some of the DAILY work of USIS according to their own document:

* Conduct 135,000 national security background checks

* process 30,000 applications for immigrant benefits

* Issue 7,000 permanent resident cards (green cards -PER DAY= 265 days x 7000 = 1,850,000 —JUST GREEN CARDS)

* Welcome 2100 new citizens.

* Welcome 3500 new permanent residents.

Does this look like we are not allowing enough “Legal” entries?

I'm proud to be a Republican nativist.

Even tho the Pubbies had to be browbeaten into finally and half-heartedly guarding the border and enforcing residency/work laws in the interior.
