The Beginning of The End: Congress To Nationalize The Auto Industry
The Patriot Room ^ | December 8, 2008 | Bill Dupray

Posted on 12/08/2008 6:32:55 AM PST by Bill Dupray

When the government takes over an industry, there are no market forces in play; politicians who no nothing about running anything decide they know how to revive a flagging industry; and new products are made based on Congressional political agendas rather than a public demand.

When the British did a "bailout" 40 years, it was the end of the British auto industry.

Congress is about to do the same thing.

So you're saying American Motors is back?

Great. I'll take a Gremlin and a bright yellow Pacer!

We'll all be driving little red wagons and carrying an umbrella.

When are the employees going to wise up and vote to get rid of the Union??

The sad part is that I have seen some people here advocate that we nationalize the auto industry..

If the companies take the cash, they would be accountable to the government for nearly every move, and for every transaction of $25 million or more.

This is what happens when you take government money. You get government on your back.

Nationalisation worked sooooo well for British Leyland in the 1970s. Also, look at the wonders that nationalisation worked for Fiat.

I’ll probably never forget when my girlfriend at the time came home with a brand new green AMC Pacer. Maybe 1979. I really had no reason to complain as she was the one making money at the time and I wasn’t. I had two cars, both were Plymouth sedan something or others, identical except for one blue, one brown, I had bot one for $150 and the other for $100, swapped the good tires off the cheaper one onto the better one and sold the $100 one for $75. I can’t recall if she had troubles with the Pacer but I know it didn’t stay around much more than a year before she traded it in.

I had an Austin Marina. It was a “death mobile”. The US auto industry started the long downward spiral in 1978 when Carter reacted to the the energy crisis by getting involed. “K-cars” geesh!

“politicians who no nothing about running anything decide they know how to revive a flagging industry;”

Sure, it’s a few more letters, but for a writer to use no when know is the correct word detracts from the message.

I’m seriously thinking of getting rid of my Grand Prix and buying a Toyota Tacoma. Nice looking pick’m up, and affordable at around $15000. Besides, it isn’t made by the United Awful Workers union.

I’ve also heard that GM is going to discontinue it’s Pontiac line anyway.

This is going to fail and the Democrats will just blame Bush for it because he signed onto this crap. I can see the mid-term political ads now: “Thousands of jobs lost because President Bush and the Republicans mismanaged the auto bailout.”

Unfortunately, when the Fedgov gets done with them, we'll be yearning for the days of Pacers, Chevettes, Mavericks, Monzas, Mustang IIs, Gremlins, Aztecs, and K Cars.

Can anyone tell me when the taxpayer is going to get a bailout?

look at the wonders that nationalisation worked for Fiat.

On a used car lot on the other side of town,
A liberal guy and a liberal gal,
Buy a Yugo!
And they drive with pride.

Public education. What can you say?. I got the 2nd “know” right, so at least my self-esteem is still partially intact, which is all that matters.

The new Utopiamobile. Faster than a speeding golf cart. Able to go 25 miles on a charge. Holds 2 passengers uncomfotably only $45,000 and built by lazy union workers. I can’t wait.

What kind of Tacoma can you get for around $15K?
