At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears. Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty Are words that were used to intimidate me. Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on Clinton! At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter. And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace. The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded The reason for the season, stopped before it started. So as you celebrate "Winter Break" under your "Dream Tree" Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me. Choose your words carefully, choose what you say Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS, not Happy Holiday!

I actually don’t mind the ‘Happy Holidays’. That does mean Holy Day. I don’t intend to replace Christmas with Holiday Day. I do use it in conjunction with though. I draw the line at ‘Winter Break’ and such.

I don’t mind “Happy Holidays” either. I’m sure it was a Madison Avenue invention decades ago to appeal to both Jews and Christians, but I’ve always felt it’s the same as saying “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year” — in fewer words!

I agree. I think Happy Holidays is used more in areas were other religions are a little more dominant. Happy Holidays was popular here in the N.E. way before the movement to squash out Christmas was in force. It was used as a respect rather than anything else.

But don’t worry, the agnostics made the news last week saying they want Happy Holidays stopped because it is hateful against agnostics. That is where I say go to a hot dark place deep in the core of the Earth.

Happy Holidays IRKS me because it is non-offensive to everyone EXCEPT Christians... Why is it that we cater to every other religion or non-religion at the EXPENSE of Christians??... this is just ONE example.. but maybe this one just strikes a chord in me this time of the year.

I’m not offended by Happy Holidays. I think Happy Holidays goes over differently depending on where one lives. When we did rural track medicine, Happy Holidays was an expression that wasn’t used in any of the states we lived in. But, upon return to our home state, it was needed.

For the past few years, I have made it a point to say "Merry Christmas" to co-workers, store clerks, tollbooth workers and just about anyone I interact with during the Christmas season. It is said in sincerity tinged with defiance.

I almost always get the same response back, and to my knowledge, I have never offended anyone with it.

These PC types must be in the minority and they are really getting out of hand.

I usually say Merry Christmas to people I know or suspect are Christians (a cross around the neck usually gives one away). As a non-Christian, I am not offended at all when someone wishes me a Merry Christmas. After all, it is their season (Kwanzaa being a made-up ethnic pride celebration, and Hannukah being a minor holiday on the Jewish calendar, and rarely celebrated outside of America until recently).

I did try wishing someone a Happy Saturnalia once, but they looked at me like I was from Pluto.

That’s “Happy Holiday,” singular, I think. But the greeting might have started there, who knows?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with X-mas. In Greek, X is the first letter in Christ.

Why is “Happy Holidays” offensive? It’s just a greeting that combines Christmas and New Year’s.

most people get a merry Christmas, for my friends who’s religious preference lean elsewhere, i’ll wish them their appropriate holiday greeting- and in return they wish me a merry Christmas.
my favourite is my buddhist friend.. “happy.. uh.. couple free vacation days” :)

Also, when you go to buy stamps for Christmas cards, there are two main ones: a generic “holiday” stamp (I think it has a stylized snowflake, IIRC), and a nice Madonna and child. Pick the latter.

I am a Christian, and it doesn't offend me. I also know many Christians, none of whom are offended by it to my knowledge. I think this is one of those perennial issues that some people just like to get all worked up about. Witness the fact that the story that began this thread was circulated on the internet last year, too. Personally I'm tired of this reactionary type stuff. And I don't think Jesus would have cared one bit about any of it.
