Hugh Hewitt wondered aloud on his radio show this week if Fred Thompson might not be a good GOP nominee for President because the country might not want another slow talking Southerner after Bush. Hes not the only GOP commentator I have heard express this sentiment.
Every time I hear someone say this, I have to wonder if the person saying it is projecting their own anti-southern bigotry onto the American public or if their really is a large bloc of voters that would base their vote on where someone is from and/or how fast they talk.
It was especially interesting for Ohiophile Hewitt to say this given that he accuses anyone of bigotry that thinks Romneys religion is relevant to their decision whether to support him for President.
Since I started blogging at Redstate three years ago and since my conservative epiphany in 2000 I can say that the biggest disappointment I have had with some conservatives in the blogosphere is the amount of anti-southern bigotry I have seen. I have even come to have a superiority complex on all things regional given that I have never known a Southerner that would not vote for someone because they were not from the South. I guess we developed this superiority during the formative Civil Rights years!
Or maybe we base our votes on relevant information? Like their policies, duh? Character?
Folks, voters vote on issues, character and leadership. Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush are all from the South. Bush kills terrorists. The other guys that talk slow appeased them. Bush cut taxes. The others from Dixie raised them. Bush picks good judges. Clinton put a feminist on the court. Carter lusted in his heart. Clinton lusted all over the carpet and Bush is faithful to his wife.
Southern Diversity. (Except on immigration, all three would sell out the country)
Voters will not be reminded of Bush if Thompson advocates border security first, cuts in government spending and delivers lines like a fine actor from Law and Order.
Where a candidate is from is irrelevant at the top of the ticket. If it is relevant to you, look in the mirror.
And just who are “the rest of them”?
Why would Texas not want to be considered a southern state? This proves my point. Southern bigotry does exist.
LOL Maybe thats the way it is.
Exactly. Great post.
But that doesn’t mean Fred is proillegal. All types of people raise money for the candidates. Maybe he just thinks Fred is a good conservative. I think George P. is half Mexican. Of course he would take that position. That doesn’t mean Fred will. Its so silly to assume a candidate takes every single position that their supporters do.
With all due respect, I am a southerner. I don’t feel at all like a victim. I love all of America. She is truly a beautiful country. “From sea to shing sea” as the song goes. I have lived in the north and the south. I am southern through and through. I know some people want to push the attitude that you described. Most don’t, but there is bigotry against the south. I have picked it up in posts from some people here in this thread. Nice people, I’m sure, who just have a subconcious thing that southerners and the south is inferior. I, and most southerners don’t really care and have never felt like victims. Mostly its amusing but sometimes I do call people on it. Especially when they make really stupid comments like Is your wife still your sister and crap like that. I have pointed out a few things in this thread just to prove my point. But usually I just ignore the comments.
But he was raised in Texas.
I lived in Texas for a couple of years. Lake Jackson, south of Houston, I think. Anyhow, I was a teenager at the time and didn’t fully appreciate it. Teenagers can never see past their nose, it seems. LOL. Texas is great! I would have loved to have seen west Texas. I just got to see east Texas.
Yeah, me too. I lived in Baytown. Is it still above water?
My wife hated Texas, but I actually kind of liked it.
Except, they don’t know how to barbecue, despite their claims.
or perhaps you're just being a LITTLE, hate-FILLED, TROLL.
btw, could it be that you're a south-HATER??? fyi, south-HATERS are no better than racists. you might think on that.

I was very homesick the whole time I was there so I guess my judgement was clouded. I lived close to Dow Chemical and I still remember the acidy smell of the plant, and the days when the ammonia would get so strong you had to roll up the car windows to keep from choking. But I loved the people there. They were so much fun. The TV show Dallas comes to mind.
My sister and her family live near Dallas, as does one of my brothers.
What gave you the idea I was talking about you? (Ego)

Oooohhh! Name calling!

Haven’t you heard about all the illegal aliens in Tennessee? I’m afraid that if the border is ever secured, Fred plans on legalizing those illegals in Tennessee.
Yes as a matter of fact, I have. I live in Tennessee. Fred was my senator. He seems very strong on border security.
“Thompson will make decisions based on his experience as a Globalist, being a Neocon, and the fact he was a Lobbyist.”
But...but...everyone says he’s a conservative! He used to guest host Paul Harvey’s show! Doesn’t that prove it?

If he’s a committed conservative he’d have voted against McCain-Feingold to begin with. If he believed in his oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, he had his shot. The people pushing him are desperate for someone to carry the GOP torch besides the front runners, and seems pretty obvious they’re pouring their own opinions into his empty suit, just as they did with Colin Powell, Schwarzkopf, Condi, and so many other also-didn’t-runs.
Further, candidates should attend debates. Thompson has that strike against him, too, that he’s ducking to avoid committing to the platform so many here so fervently wish he supports.
No more Souters, no more compassionate conservatives, and no more stealth candidates. The GOP will nominate a proven conservative or it won’t get my vote. I won’t get fooled again.
